With a March 30th launch date on the books, I'm starting spring maintenance this weekend, regardless of how much snow is on the ground at the marina. First chore will be to thaw out the engine....

When do you start?

Warren .That is one cool engine .Wish we could launch by the end of March .We are still skiing mid winter conditions ,and sad to say we may not get to our boat till the second week of April if the snow conditions stay good !

Please tell us that is not your engine. If it is yours, good luck. I have absolutely no experience with the very hard water, but it can't be good.

That happened to my engine once down here in Corpus. I just started it right up and the ice melted away, easy!

New season

Hi Warren, we sail year around here in PNW waters. Never gets that cold. The admiral and I spent last week on the water cruising from our marina to Poulsbo, which was about 70 miles round trip. Had a great time with two other skippers who joined our little flotilla. Weather was mostly cold and clear with some sail time. The furnace kept the boat toasty warm.

I visit Trav'ler numerous times in the winter to ensure that the photo displayed does not happen. Trav'ler will splash at the end of April.

Engine update: Jim hit it right. The pic I posted above really is not (thankfully) my engine.... Yet, someone who really had that frozen engine posted that pic here some years ago and asked for advice. I believe that, in the end, he melted the ice away with a hair dryer, changed the oil, squirted some lubricating oil into the cylinders -- and the engine fired right up. We were all pretty happy for him.

Hope you all are making your (spring maintenance) lists and checking them twice. Gets longer every time you do it. Yet, I always look forward to getting started on the actual chores.... and getting the boat back into its (and my) natural environment. My first sail of the season makes me thankful for a lot of stuff....

:dance:I launch in 20 days and I've already got the boat waxed and this weekend I hope to replace the headliner material in the aft cabin wall so the new ports can be installed a week later,thats the major project before launch but the list of little items is loooong
And I remember that picture of the frozen engine and was so glad it worked out well,can you imagine pulling open the motor cover and finding that :eek:

You had me for a second, Warren!!

As a Floridian, the ONLY ice I have experience with goes in my glass. I looked at that picture, and realized my mouth was wide open. My first thought was: we turn on sprinklers during hard freezes to keep the strawberries around 30 degrees to prevent damage, maybe that's what they do up north....

No way. Can't be. Thank goodness the responses let me know it was a joke!

Looks like I will get some work done this weekend. It's supposed to be in the 70's Sat and Sun and well, if the winds and tides cooperate, I plan on getting out for at least a little sailing :dance:

Man that's a cool engine. Have to launch by April 15th, but its so cold here and so much snow on the ground. I hope it will be ok by launch time.
