OK, so maybe there's still snow on the ground where you are, but the first day of spring is next week! What are your spring sailing plans? Do you have a date picked out to splash your boat again? Do you have a cleanup planned to remove the accumulated crud from a winter in the water? Maybe a haulout to powerwash and repaint the bottom? Or with warmer and longer days do you have a cruising weekend in the works? Share your spring sailing plans here, then vote in the Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page. Splash in May

It seems as if the winter may never leave the frozen northeast. Their are parts of Boston Harbor that still have ice! Anyway, my bigggest plans before splash (aside from the weekly trip to SHOVEL THE BOAT) are to reinstall some electronics, recover space that is poorly used now and re-do the teak and other wood throughout the boat. I may also pull the mast, but that's an open question right now. Otherwise it's just nits and fits before we go sailing. I'm looking forwrd to a (hopefully) relatively inexpensive recommissioning this year. I'm even considering skipping the bottom paint this year to see how last years job holds up. Geof s/v Day-O

Already been out twice

Granted...it is easier to launch my 170 on a whim, and here in Virginia we have had a few really nice days lately. I got the boat out on both March 2nd and 9th. We gotta get our sailing in before the winds die in the summer heat.

End of March this Year

I really have a hankering to do more sailing this year, including more long-weekend cruises in the Chesapeake! For several reasons, I'm going to push it and start sailing around the end of March this year. I'm in a new slip and have to move the boat anyway, I'm getting my sails back from reconditioning then, and I'm really hot to get back out!!

Spring is here year round!

Thinking about the "new spring sailing season" I realize that I have not stopped sailing from the last season. Living in southern California I have not had more than a week or two in the entire winter when I was not out sailing. Those weekends were conflicts with family responsibilities, not due to weather. This is a great place to sail, the chanel islands, San Diego, Long Beach, Los Angeles, King Harbor, Ventura, Santa Barbara........ I am just as excited each spring however, it means more fun and sailing. Dr. Allen Kent

Mid April Launch IF Ice Disappears!

We are scheduled to launch on April 12, but at the rate of this weather, it may be a little "hard" to do with the ice on Sandusky Bay. This weekend, the temps got up to 60 on Saturday and hit a high of 30 on Sunday. Today (Monday) the temp was 16 with a wind chill of 2 at 7 AM, so we are still hoping to see some warmer (Spring-like) weather before the end of March. With some help from the warmth, the bottom will get painted and we will launch on schedule. General clean up will, probably, happen in the water after launch this year. Boy, it sure has been a LONG winter!!

Good Friday!!

Can you think of a more appropriate time to put her back in? Maybe that means I gave up sailing for Lent? Now, if it would just warm up here long enough for me to get my bottom ready!

Still Ice Fishing in Michigan

I was out fishing from my shanty yesterday on Muskegon Lake, 10 to 12" of thick, black ice to hack through yet. I can see the boat sitting on the hard from where I fish and it is a strange two world view. We haven't had a good winter like this one in years and all the experts say it will help with the lowering water levels and fish spawning so I guess it may have been worth waiting through. Sure will be nice to get to spring though. It was 4 degrees on my way into work this morning with highs perdicted in the upper teens to low twenties-yehaaw. Hang tight my northern friends-our time is coming! Keep the shinny side up---------Dana

8 Degrees in Chicago

It's too cold to even think of getting wet outside. Boat will splash mid-May. Hopefully lots of warmer weekends between now and then. Took off stern rail seat slats last fall and have them re-finished, sails should be ready be now, made some contacts to get new matresses for the aft bunk, tried to get WM to replace a battery I thought was in less than great shape (they disagreed), put all the Christmas boat gifts in one spot to take up when the weather finally stops freezing, and re-read the stack of sailing magazines and catalogs that are piled on the cofee table....I'M FREAKIN' READY! First Spring Launch

Plenty of snow still left on the ground here, but I have a list of projects from my pre-purchase survey that must be completed (new lower shrouds, replace cockpit scupper hose, compound and wax topsides and coachroof, replace a light switch, buy new VHF) all before my scheduled 5/23 launch. This is the first time I am launching my Cape Dory 25, and have much to learn, but have been planning all winter!

Labor of Love

April 1 clean-up begins. A little bottom paint on the running edges. Wash and wax the hull, scrub the deck, and clean the cabin up. Install electronics, and replace paddlewheel on knotmeter. Put on the boom, spinaker pole, install the wheel, bring the bruce anchor forward to bow roller, and get the running rigging set-up. Bring up cushions and stuff like that. Set up bumpers on dock and set up fixed dock lines. Boat will hit the water the last week in April (our marina is open for business on April 15). Then the real work begins...sand the teak, clean the teak, and seal the teak. Climb the mast and replace the anometer cups on the wind instrument which the winter wind has broken. Bring up dinghy, motor for dinghy, kitchen stuff, books, etc. Oh yes, sails have to be brought on board and set-up. Set up dock box, get out electric cable, and set up fresh water hose and dock shower hook-up. Pumpout antifreeze and fill fresh water tank. Pumpout the redpop antifreeze from the holding tank. Change oil on diesel even though it was done before winter lay-up. Set up cockpit, install bimini, install dodger, and then check to see if I have forgotten anything. While all this is going on people who share the same experiences will be dropping by, it is always a great time of year. It will probably be the middle of May by the time we are out on the water with the summer ahead of us. I wouldn't want to spend the springtime any other way.

3 weeks!

The first boat of the year left our marina on Sat....he was anxious to get to his home in NC...he purchased the boat in Jan. He is in the service and wanted to get the boat home before any possible military deployment....I felt for him and as I watched him glide down the river. ..Just then I wanted to flush the antifreeze out of my lines and head on out also! But as old man winter is still hanging around April 1st is our weekend!..we all have cabin fever and cant wait to get back on the water!!.come on spring!
