As spring approaches, the season's first sail is anticipated by many northern owners. What will you do for your first sail of the year (or, if you're in a southern climate, your first sail of the spring)? Are you planning a day-sail test of all systems, a quick weekend overnight, a Spring Break week away... or the beginning of an extended cruise? Share (or make) your cruising plans here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the CO home page.

Completely alone in Emerald Bay

I decided to take my Cat. 30 over to Catalina this weekend to celebrate spring and try out a new 3 blade prop I'd just put on. The crossing was beautiful with dolfins, mola mola, and whales everywhere and I only needed to motor sail for about a half hour. I pulled into Emerald Bay Friday afternoon (there is room for about 100 boats) and I was the only boat there. In fact, I was the only boat in the bay the entire weekend. The Harbor Patrol came by the next day to collect fees and see if I was OK and that was the only human contact I had during the whole trip. The weather was beautiful, sunny and warm, but it was actually kind of spooky being there by myself.

1st trip for spring

I consider the 1st time out each season the "breakdown" cruise. I try not to go any where too far from help. Even though I do a complete PM before the 1st time out it seems like something always breaks!
