Spring cleats on H26?

I'm thinking of adding some midship cleats to my H26. To keep it simple, I plan to install them on the flat of the rubrail, similar to the way the shroud U-bolts are fastened. I'm trying to decide whether to put them forward or aft of the shrouds. One possibility is just forward of where the operable portlights are, so that they are accessable from the cockpit. Anywhere else, and you have to reach down from the cabintop. Has anyone else done this, or thought about it? Anything I'm overlooking?

I've Thought About It on My 23.5

What were you planing on doing for backing plates? While your at it why not put two on? One a third of the way up the other a third of the way back.

Backing plates

2 possibilities. The simplest would be stainless steel 1/4" fender washers (1 1/4" outside diameter) with one edge bent to approximate the contour of the rubrail's underside. The other option would be 1/2" by 1/4" SS barstock predrilled with 1/4" holes, similar to what's backing the shroud U-bolts. I'm leaning toward the washers, but comments are invited.

I have installed midship cleats on my former H23.5 and now on my H260. I had a machine shop fabricate SS backing plates 6 inches long (cost about $5.00 each. I installed them on the "lip" of the boat at the rubrail. It was a very easy task (I have minimal mechanical ability). Don't forget a big glob of 5200 between the cleat

Bruce, forward or aft of the shrouds?

You convinced me on the backing plates. $5 is well worth the security.

I used 6 inch cleats. The backing plate was Stainless steel, 8 inches long and 0.5 inches wide. I placed the cleats aft of the shrouds. My 260 is a '97. I have a decal that says "HUNTER" on the side; the cleat is directly above the "U". Fair Winds, Bruce H260 "Allie D."
