Spreaders

We're at coat 5 on the spreaders and have read that you then continue varnishing the bottom and sides and then put 2 coats of white paint on the tops. Assume this is due to the sun beating down but I don't recall seeing this done- though it is kind of hard to see the tops!

What's the norm- if there is one??
