Good thing you weren't out sailing when that happened! You will want to call around to see about a new mast. Ocean Riggers in Black Rock and Black Rock Boat Works in Bridgeport might be worth contacting, along with others up near you in Branford or Clinton.

O'Day had six different spar suppliers years ago. They used Dwyer-Damco in Branford Ct., Z-Spar out of Bristol RI. (out of business) Isomat Spars, Fall River Ma. and Miami Fl., Sparcraft Irvine Ca., and Yacht Riggers in Seattle Wa.

I had a similar failure a couple of years ago. A shroud caught something as we were stepping the mast. By the time anyone realized it, a crack had formed in the mast around the spreader base. I took it to a welder and he drilled out a 4-5 section with a hole. He said that if he just welded the cracks it would probably crack again in the future. He filled in the area with 1/4" aluminum. Cost was 300-350 USD. the mast has been through many 20+ knot days and a few 30+. Take your mast down and have an expert evaluate it.

A new mast could probably be ordered through D & R Marine

BIGGER than a fist sized hole. Surprised that stick is still upright.

A new mast may cost more than the boat is worth. I would have a rigger or surveyor give you an opinion if it is repairable. If not look for a beat up used 24 and buy it for the mast.
