I guess I don't feel that spreader lights are a necessity. I've done a lot of night sailing, and never used them. They take away your ability to see for a few minutes after you turn them off. Your eyes adjust to the dark after a few minutes, and you can see everything on deck at that point. Anything hanging will eventually catch something, a loose halyard, a flag, possibly a sail. It's one less thing to get something hung up on. I keep a red LED flashlight in the cockpit at night, and have a red headlamp for times I need to use both hands. Nothing to get caught on, nothing to blind me. I do have a foredeck light, but don't use it much. I think I've used it a couple of times at a dock when putting sails away. Then it just attracted insects.
