I want to order new spreader boots for my 1985 H34 so I am ready for spring but I don't know what size Hunter used. I really don't want to go up the mast this time of year. Anyone have any idea what size to use? Boat US advertises 3 sizes. 1/2-1 1/2" 1-2" 2-3" Thank You Ron

Boots

If your 34 spreader tips are similar in size to those on the 37.5, none of the plastic boots will fit without being split open and taped around the tips. Buy the largest ones listed.

Two other options

My H34, 1984 came to me (about 6 years ago) with leather boots. I have seen these kits advertised in various places including the classifides at the back of various sail publications, or check Sailrite which sells sail kits & supplies. The leather lasted several seasons plus whatever time the original owner installed. When it came time to re-boot I looked around and talked to my sail-maker and he suggested I use several strips of spinnaker cloth which he provided free of charge. I then used speader-boot tape from West Marine to tape over & prevent the cloth ends from from untieing. Depending on usage just a touchup of tape usually on the lower spreaders where the jib slides accross once each year. You would still have to tape the plastic boots and touch them up and the cloth is cheaper than plastic. The leather had no tape as they are stitched on the spreader to itself. BOL PJ

Spreaders Boots 2

Which spreader boots will go with B&R rig found on new Hunters?(and my 29.5) I couldn't find any ready-made ones to fit. Which such angled-back spreaders such units that fit are deffinitly welcome for the mainsail health..

Booted the Boots

When I replaced the standing rigging on my H34, I replaced the stainless steel pins through the ends of the spreaders with 1/2" shoulder bolts and acorn nuts. The bolt heads are on the aft side and the rounded nuts are on the forward side. This eliminated the need for cotter pins. I used loctite in the nut and coated the shoulder of the bolt with anti-sieze. With this setup, I feIt comfortable enough to go with no boots or tape as all the exposed surfaces were very smooth. It is nice that everything stays exposed for rinsing and inspection. So far in three years I've seen no chafing of the sails. For future removal, I can get a wrench on the bolt head and rotate it free. I had to mill the old pins out as they were so frozen in place. (This was of course after the mast was removed and the spreaders were unbolted from the mast). It was a little unwieldy to haul all the the shrouds and spreaders over to my friends house where he had a nice mill. I was afraid I would break the cast ends of the spreader tips if I hammered on them. No amount of penetrant or heating with a propane torch seemed to loosen them up enough to press them free. Anyone else have problems with removing the spreader tip pins? Allan "Alchemie" H34 SF Bay

Holland Marine Product (HMP) in Toronto Ontario has them in the 2000-2001 catalog, on page 305. They come in small, medium, and large, cosing $12, $13, and $18 CDN each. See www.hollandmarine.com, e-mail orderdesk@hollandmarine.com, fax 416-762-4458, or phone 416-762-3821. The picture in the catalog looks exactly like the boots on my '89 H30 Isomat mast spreaders.

Thanks to all for the help but I really want to replace them with the rubber boots. I was hoping that someone had replaced them and that they know the size. Thank You Ron
