I recently purchased a 1985 Catalina 30. Should spreader boots be installed, or are the curved ends of the spreaders suficient to minimize interference with the foresail?

Can't do any harm... if it bugs you do climb up the rigging... you might consider gluing on some reinforcement patches where the sail rubs the spreader ends....Or....... do both..... if you're using a 120% or smaller sail it may not even touch the spreaders.
spreader boots......a must to avoid chaffing. While your up there, check, clean and/or replace bulb in steaming light (deck light), check spreader hardware attachment to mast.
I think a sailboat looks naked without spreader boots!
Be careful to chose them wisely though because if they are sticky at all your jib may get caught up as you tack and it's a nightmare! Happen to us for quite some time on the boat we crew on... Finally one of our crew went up the mast and taped off the sticking rubber. Took a lot of effort and some scary moments in races when we could not get the sail around?
