Hello all,

so I have seen many boats with fishing lines hung like a web over the spreaders… starting where spreader meets mast then going to the stay a few times to make a fan like deterrent. How do people attach these lines and what are the best to use. I assume a heavy fishing line is best.

thanks

A more permanent method
I have tried string, cable ties but nothing lasted years. I finally came up with a solution. I secured a piece of teak 1/2" thick by 2" wide and long enough to go from the end of the spreader at the stay and about 12" short of the mast. With a nail gun I shot SS 2" finishing nails so the heads were flush about 1" o.c. in a zig zag pattern. I attached the assembly to the spreader using 14 guage Romex, only the white wire, to the spreader and twisted the ends where they met on the underside of the spreader. I have used this method for over ten years and have never had a bird perch on the spikes for more than a second.

I inserted screws on either side of the mast about 4" above the spreader and then ran a pieces of SS wire from the screw(s) to the end of the spreader (so the SS wire ran above the spreader arm) - never another bird.
