Geoff,

My son has worked for DUFOUR when he was student and at school he learned the good way of applying varnish. The room must be at 25°C/77°F but the varnish needs also to be warm, he explained that he got the same results (orange peel) with a cold place (less than 20°c) or with a cold varnish stored in a cold place. He has to redo the job twice. Check these two parameters and good luck....

I'm happy to report that after making a series of changes, that I'm getting excellent results. Based upon feedback from this forum and others, I did the following:

1) Thinned the Epifanes 25% with spraying thinner. The viscosity was measured at 25 seconds in a Zahn #2 cup.
2) Increased the diameter of the nozzle from 1mm to 2 mm
3) Replaced the aircap on the gun with the larger one to match the nozzle.
4) Increased the room temp to 70F

Note that I'm using a 4 stage Apollo 1025 HVLP turbine and a 5000 series gun.

The final result looked just like the factory. I'm a happy man!

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
