I began to notice a give or sponginess to my deck about 12 inches from the mast stepping plate on a Catalina 22 (1987). I understand that this is potentially a serious problem. Is their a remedy? Also, is the mast as it is stepped on the plate supported by a rod or post anchored to a secured place in the bilge?

The turned post at the forward dinette seat back is directly under the mast step and transfers mast compression loads down to the keel or hull bottom if you have a swing keel. It should be shimmed tight.
