I pulled my mast today, and looking inside for a way to run the halyards internal I discovered several sponges tied to the wires inside and they seemed to be secured to something as I couldn't pull them out. (by tugging on the wires) Has anyone seen this ? What are they for ? Can they be removed ?

For a good night sleep!

Brad, Typically such set-up is to keep the wires inside you mast for rattling and making too much noise. This would help you sleep at night. I install some on my old C25 and made my little family very happy to sleep on board. Enjoy. G

Mast clanging

The sponges are there to prevent the halyard from making contact with the sides of the mast which in turn would create an annoying repeated clang every time a boat goes by. I would leave them there unless they are causing some problem. Another common method of achieving the same result is using cable ties without cutting the tails, thereby holding the halyards off the sides. Best, Trevor

More info needed to run halyards internal.....

The "less noise" theory makes sense, ....but my halyards are EXTERNAL....there aren't any inside, so why the sponges ??? And, the sponges appear to be tied to the mast head light wiring harness..... Has anyone removed them ? Has anyone run their halyards internal and run into the same thing ? What did you do with them ?? I can't run the halyards internal with them in there, but I don't know how to remove them short of jerking the wiring harness out too. Any ideas ??

Then it's for the wires not the halyards.

Ghislain's answer is the most appropriate for your question.
