Splitting the back stay

I'm quite annoyed with the back stay on my 33. Its angle on each side of the helm make it difficult to move forward when needed.

I'm toying with the idea of moving the "Y" further up to reduce the angle and to make movements easier.

Anyone has done this?

It would involve a new stay but I would just keep the same adjuster.

Wouldn't the new 'Y' have to be very much larger to make a difference? If not for the need to adjust you could just run two back stays. Of course that makes rig tuning a little more difficult. We of the single backstay cannot appreciate your problem.

I looked into that last year. Talked with a professional rigger and he said there are no problems moving the split higher up. I also talked to him about running two stays from the top. He was not in favor of that as the connection would wear with the movement of the boat. I think Sam Lust rigged his 33 like that with what he calls twin back stays. I looked for and found his mention of it. Follow the link.
