I have a 1985 C-27 TR. I've noticed a couple of hairline splits (going with the grain)on the top and bottom. Is this a common problem? If so, how is the best way to resolve this.

I don't have them on my C-27, but if I did I would be very concerned. I would consider removing the stay, and easing out the wood, then having another one cut to demension, seal it/finish it, and re-install. I am sure Catalina Direct sells them - and they can be reasonable on parts sometimes. One thing you do not want is for that wood to fail - world of hurt. I'm gonna inspect mine tomorrow. splits on tall rig 27
Most wood will get a few cracks or splits as it dries out and expands during the year. If the splits are only 1/16 or so deep, I would not worry about it at all. Just apply a coat of varnish or oil and enjoy the day. If the cracks are bad, say most of the way through the board and rather long, then I would think about replaceing it. Be carefull about filling the cracks, if the wood dries out some and shrinks around the wood filler, it could cause the split to get worse.

Zephyrus was just being honest or you want him to just agree with you. Maybe this is what you want to read: "Yes Ladonna your the greatest Catalina 27 expert on this site, of course you know it all". I remember times when you also was rude to some new boaters posting on this site. Maybe you think everybody will think and buy your vast boating experience by talking down on new boaters. You always act like you knew it all. Well maybe your boyfriend or your parents was not around to help you answer this question or you think that you are just the best. Try not to look or talk down on little people and new boaters.

I sure would like you to give me detailed examples of when I was rude to ANYONE here. Go ahead, search the archives & then email me. And just as an FYI, my boyfriend rarely helps me answer any questions in this forum and when he does I plainly state that he is answering the question. I have never asked my folks a question relating to this board - they haven't been serious sailors for about 15 years now and don't know a thing about Catalinas. I'm sorry that you are so offended by me - I don't claim to know everything about Catalinas. I just try to answer the questions I know - or sometimes *think* I know. I have never seen LaDonna act the way Randy suggests. Sounds to me like someone's manhood is threatened by a woman knowing more than he about a "manly" sport such as sailing. Keep up the good work LaDonna, you certainly know more about Catalinas than I do.
