Where does a person even start when it comes to splicing rope. Tools, books or even key words to help me get started would be appreciated. Thanks

Splicing tool for double braid

The splicing toll on the website you recommend is 47.00. My home made tool made out of a coat hanger takes 5 minutes to make, and costs about 50 cents (? how much does a coat hanger cost) but it is slightly more difficult to use but only slightly. The five minutes to make it is as follows: unwind the coat hanger and straighten out the wire bend it in half with pliers form two very small hooks on the ends of the two legs you are done let me know if you want instructions how to use it. Note that this invention was created after another equally expensive tool I purchased broke in half. I use this a lot and love it dave

Brion Toss

Brion is a god - and a very nice guy. But that tool makes my checkbook ache every time I think about it! I used it at a boat show to splice some double braid & it worked well but ouch! I like the coat hanger idea and I think most folks here would truly appreciate if you would post full instructions on it's use. I know I would!

bought NER kit then practiced

I wanted to learn how to make an eye in double braid. Here's what I did. 1. I bought the kit (about $12) from New England Rope (NER). 2. I read the instructions in the kit (three pages long.) 3. I reread the instructions. 4. Reread...(you get the picture.) 5. Skip this step...I didn't. got some old 7/16 double braid...tried three times to make an eye. Almost did it, but the eye wouldn't close. The rope was too old..wouldn't slide or give. 6. Do this step...I got some new rope. Followed NER instructions. It worked great...the first try the splice was cool. Hope this helps.
