DO NOT BUY any of these commercial splicing snake oil splicing tools. I have posted my Magic Splicing Tool that is free of charge and works far better than any other tool I have ever tried. You make it out of a coat hanger for larger line or you can use twisted safety wire or other small diameter wire for small diameter line. If you do a search on here you should get a picture and instructions. I repeat don't waste your money. Since I threw this out there for free I have no financial interest in this recommendation. I have used this for dozens of splices and it works great. Enjoy
yes it does ...i made one after reading his post about it ...and have used it for several splices and had great success with it ....... only i use a welding rod i had around the shop....

go get your self a 1/8 or 5/32 7018 flux coated welding rod from a welder some where and knock off all the flux and make it out of that it will be strong and not bend easy......but it will rust as it is farrous metal but you can store it in and oil rag and i will be fine...

Or you can just use stainless TIG welding filler rod (wire) and not have to knock off the flux or worry about rust. Hell with how few people actually still stick weld TIG rod is probably easier to come by too.

Thank all, I'm reviewing your comments and the sites. I'll probably try the single braid approach, as it will be an intro to double braid. Now I just need to locate a fid for 3/8" line.

special thanks to Woody for a reality check, that DIY isn't necessarily the best approach.

Chris,
Not the best approach? Seems like Woody validated the approach but used a different kind of wire? How this came about was I had tried a fid with a pusher rod, total pain in the rump. Then I bought a tool called a Super Snake Splicing Tool. It was fantastic and I loved it. Unfortunately after 5 or 6 splices it snapped in half. So then I looked at it and said I can make the same thing out of a coat hanger with my hands and some needle nose pliers. Again for small diameter line you just need smaller diameter wire that is fairly stiff. To make it stiff you can twist it together. It is your money and your decision, so by all means do what you want. I am sure that Brian Toss tool will do a fantastic job if you want to shell out the money.

Right.... you can buy a single fid from WM for around 7 bucks.... BTW the secret to using the Samson type fid is to taper the rope end slightly, then insert the trimmed rope end into the fid and wrap it spirally with masking tape to keep it secured.

You can purchase 3/8" NE Regatta Braid.... more that adequate for your purpose, from this source for $0.81 /ft..... that's 50 cents a foot cheaper than WM.

Finally.... here's another source for splicing 12 strand line:
