While many on this board are pulling and winterizing their boats, I have just completed a bottom job and hull paint. Reglassing of a rudder bottom that has obviously been agound pretty hard, a new PSS dripless shaft seal, re torquing keel bolts and other things that need to be done when the boat is on the hard. Splash day is Friday, and the winter sailing season will begin. Hope to run into some other gulf coast sailors soon.

I wish our seasons were longer up here. Spring comes... we do the minimal amount of work to get the boat in the water fast, then kick ourselves in the *ss... as we didn't do all the stuff we really wanted to do.

I would like to skip a season to get the work I really want to do done... however my better half says no way... we are sailing stupid.

Rich,
Every once in a while I catch myself thinking that I would like a little more off season to get boat stuff done. Then I tell myself NAAAA go ahead and sail.

We winterized Sunday afternoon. I would have gone for a sail but got vetoed. Nora called today and said that Bietzpadlin is docked on the hard until April.

Yeah, I did it all by my little old self. ( Emphasis on the old part.) With the exception of the fiberglass work on the bottom of the rudder. Didn't trust my glass skills enough to have a go at that. Previously it was a white hull, with a 6" beige cove stripe. Boat is an 81 model, and there were too many dings and dents and scratches to try to save the old gel coat. The color is, surprise, sail blue. I was undecided between a couple different shades of blue, and the name was the deciding factor. Biggest hassle of the whole thing was getting the old shaft coupler off. PB blaster and determination beat it into submission.

Really nice.

I agree with Maine Sail, we need more information about the paint job. My '79 H37C is going to need that in a few years I am afraid. Luckily the gelcoat still waxes up fairly well. You do know that our boats are related? Bob Seidelmann and John Cherubini were friends. Bob recommended John to the Luhr brothers(Hunter) as I recall.

There was a 37S in our marina in Huron for years, a really nice boat. But because the company was out of business no one would touch it. Not sure whatever happened to that boat. Below is one of each, my H37C and the 37S.

Normally the snow holds off in any significant amounts until close to Christmas. This year we were hit couple of weeks ago and its still here !!! :cussing:


Nice paint job, the boat looks nice.... enjoy. :D:D

Beautiful boat! My maintinance program is much like Rich's, my attitude much like Scott's. Our weather here is probably similar to both. Someday maybe I'll get around to trying some wax. My winter sailing season is done on ice skates. Hope you have a great "off" season.

Looks fantastic Nice & Easy!

What type of paint did you use? How long would you estimate it took to paint (including all prep work, etc)? Mine has too many dings and scratches at this point and I would like to paint someday down the road...
Do you have a before picture?

A before pic

I'll attach a before pic. The gel coat wasn't too bad if you didn't look real close, but she had a lot of dock rash and scars. Too much work to try to fill and match gel coat with all the little scrapes, scratches and dings. Since I am color blind, matching the gel coat, would have taken another set of eyes. Also as I am color blind, one of the colors I see best is blue, and I have always wanted a blue boat. Now I got one.
I did know that Cherubini and Bob Seidelmann were good buds, and my understanding is that he had a hand in the design of this boat. While the house looks different, the hulls of the S37 and the Hunter do look very, very similar. The paint used is not boat paint. And is sort of an experiment. It is a Glidden, gloss polyurethane, porch and deck paint. From what I see so far, it is going to do pretty good. It dries to the touch reasonably quick, but takes three or four days to totally cure out. And then it is hard as the gates of hell. Time will tell.

In that pic

In that before pic, the area of the bottom that is sanded off, is the area where I had the pox really bad. Just that area and absolutely nothing on the other side. All the spots up on the hull are where I had started patching dings.

Nice&Easy that looks great. Did you roll or spray it? And how did you do her name, vinyl or paint?
I wanted to launch mine this week, but I am stuck going to Big Bend State Park in Texas with my wife's family for thanksgiving.
I was wondering if you used ablative bottom paint or the hard stuff? That really does look nice. How long before your next planned haul?

I've been lurking but this new board format seems to have slowed the number of posts for a while. Besides, I haven't been able to sail so not much to say.
