Interesting question... you mean like a roller genneker (asym)? or a snuffer (sym)?

Yes, a gennaker roller so you can fly a reacher or maybe a code zero. I am a bigger boat sailer so this is the type of gear I am used to. I am looking forward to sailing a smaller more responsive boat however, I do know how and why to use some of the gear the bigger boats are using, just wondering if any of you guys are already doing it.

Not that I know of, but I know I've seen pictures of a Capri 22 with a sprit (selden maybe?) so I suppose you could. It would certainly make it easier than dealing with the sock on my gennaker. let us know how it works if you get one.

Last fall my wife and I visited the Annapolis sail only boat show. I was casually looking for a way to douse the spinnaker on our Capri 22, Chingaletta. I don't use it often and when I do I actually rig it as an asymmetrical and that works well enough for me. In any event, I found a couple of options to easily douse the big head and both vendors asked why bother! No disrespect or abuse intended but the feeling was it is a small boat with a small spinnaker how much trouble is it to take down.

In the end I agreed and spent some of the money on Rum Drinks, for health reasons. It was really windy and cold and rainy and the rum was good for my mental health.

Cheers,
Curt

I can easily respond to the above statement, I always sail alone and am always looking for safer and more efficient ways to get it done.

Tom it's not a bad question nor an uncommon problem.
But part of the problem with using a gennaker furler would be to get the rig out away from the pulpit. That is quite doable with a sprit, not sure it'd work well without that. Interestingly enough an inexpensive sprit can be obtained from catalina direct.

perhaps a setup like this for a proper gennaker.

Boy I'd love to see it setup if you wind up doing it, and I'd love to see the Capri 22 turned into an Asym monster. It'd turn the boat into a screamer off wind.

If that is too much extra cost (been there), and you plan on utilizing the existing symmetrical spinnaker, there are some easy ways of using it solo. You could pick a light wind day, launch from the companionway, under the genoa, and out. This allows you to blanket the spin as it goes up... AS far as dousing, again if you use the companionway, blow the halyard first while pulling in the sheet, make sure the genoa is out so it dumps easier (not under load). Believe it or not solo symmetrical spin launches on the 22 are pretty doable. I've done this a few times, but always in light air, I can't imagine attempting it solo under a lot of load...

On the catalina 30 we just clip it to the loop on the anchor roller.works good. I'll figure a way to put it on my cp22

FWIW, I have a C22 gennaker that I fly off a block on the pulpit and one on the stem fitting. It works pretty well. The rope on the sock is the one I need to figure out as you have to go forward to douse it. Might just need to replace the existing line with a really long one and then I just need a way to get it on deck if I'm short handed or sailing alone.

I flew the asym on my 26 (Temptress) a few times solo.
The system used a sock (dowser).

To do it right all you have to do is make sure no one is watching.

But if there is another soul anywhere in sight, expect problems.

I have added a code zero on my Capri with a Facnor Furler Fx 900 and a Selden Bow sprint. This furls from the bottom. It actually works quite well and the boat honks on a reach. To fly a Asym you do need the top down. Unfortunately Facnor doesn't offer the conversion kit for the FX 900, only the next model larger has the conversion kit offered, and while Profurl does offer a kit that will fit the FX it's a bit pricey, 1100 (for just the Swivel and torsion line). So actually I'm working on building one my self from a Top swivel of a Snap furl . You will need the torsion line to furl it from the top and the line by it self is 2-300. So if I pull this off I will definitely post pictures

Like some of you I came from big boats and am used to single handing. So given my club only does windward leeward the code zero is nice but not filling the need. Lately I have been using it wing on wing. So if I can't fabricate a top down adapter I'm going to stick with that for now.
