What kind of shackles?
now I’m confused, which is the guy?
The guy is the line that goes through the pole, the sheet is the other one. Just to keep things confusing, after a jibe the guy is the sheet and the sheet is the guy. Some boats will have lazy guys and lazy sheets, we'll cover that in Spinnaker 201.

Commonly in use are large bail swivel snap shackles. The large bail helps to prevent the shackle jamming into the pole end. There are also specialty shackles designed for spinnaker use that are more easily released.

One possible option. Ask to sail on another boat that has a spinnaker and a skipper who likes to use it. That will give you a feel of the equipment and the experience without investing in new lines that may or may not feel like they work well.

That Yachting Monthly artical covered a lot of the basics. I liked the statement... "The secret when starting out is to think it through and set it in light winds when making a mistake is easily retrievable."

This is a great secret.
