Is there a rule of thumb for spinnaker sheet length? I have a Beneteau First 310 (31 footer), would I need around 60 feet per sheet or could I get by with 50?

60' for sure...

...if you do cross-deck sheeting you'll need a little more like 70'.

Cross Deck Sheeting ??

I'm not familiar with that. How would that be rigged, and what are the benefits? Thanks.

First 310 Specs

I received this document from the Beneteau service department. According to it the spin sheets are 60'. It also has the spec for all the other running rigging. If you would like the whole doc email me at rsrohrbeck"at"swbell.net and I'll be happy to send to you. Its in a PDF format and I'm not sure how to post it to this site.

X deck sheeting?

is cross deck sheeting when you stand over on the windward side of the boat (also a bit forward) with the sheet so you have a better view of the spinnaker???

Yes, and you don't need extra length sheets

to cross sheet because the active sheet has extra length available since it's on the short side of the boat. The lazy sheet must wrap entirely around the shrouds so that is where the full length is needed. On a racing spin with pole, the sheets do not have to wrap around the forestay as they do on an asymetrical so theoretically the 2x boatlength sheet is uneccessary....but if you want to cross sheet, as racer's regularly do, then the 2x length is needed.

Sym or asym??

If you're running an asymetrical spin and using a sock, a much simpler approach is to use only ONE sheet, drop the sock and rerig on the gybe. benefits: lighter, less line, simpler to rig. Cons - less cool.
