Since I have the mast down and at home, I've been wraslin' with the idea of rigging it for a spinnaker. With the Jib halyard sheave all the way at the top of mast crane, it doesn't leave much room for a clean spinnaker halyard sheave.

Been considering several options involving spinnaker bails and exit boxes in different positions. Was just wondering if this has been discussed before and what was decided as the best option.

Cheers and Happy Holidays!

Google or yahoo "masthead spinnaker fitting setup" - you'll get a lot if ideas.

If you have an extra jib halyard, you could use that. But a separate setup for a spinnaker block and halyard typically has a plate extending from the front of the mast head, with a bail that extends a couple inches forward of the forestay. A block is attached to the bail and the spin halyard goes through the block. You want the bail and spin halyard to be clear (above and out front of) the forestay to avoid wrap of the spin halyard into the roller furling. Probaly less of an issue if you don't have a roller furling.

Good luck.

First of all you should tell us if you have a cruising spinnaker or a spinnaker with a pole?
I have written much about this in old posts, I believe, but the boat will be rigged differently depending on the type of kite you have. Answer that question first.

Thanks for the answers. We will be using a kite with a pole.

I have already installed a sheave box (at the point where the steaming light used to be) for a topping lift.

I have a masthead spinnaker bail on order from Rigrite. It is the smallest they make, but should be sufficient for this application.

Because I want to run the spin halyard internally, the problem is whether to just have the halyard exit out of a hole about 3 feet below the crane and then up to the block hanging on the bail or to install a sheave box off center at the top.

Other more elaborate ideas involve relocating the headstay down to the mast and using the jib sheave in the crane with spin/bail/block idea. Then putting a sheave box below the new headstay connection for the jib.

I have also already installed exit plates for the Main, Jib, Topping, & Spin halyards at about shoulder height at the base of the mast. Also have a really neat mast base plate from Garhauer that will hold the mast base blocks and vang.
