Spinnaker Set Up

Greetings folks! I've had a spinnaker for many years but have never used it!!!! Can you give me some tips? What length and size of line (sheets) to be used, also what size pole? All I have is a whisker pole which extends pretty far, but I'm not sure how far it should go! Any information or experience would be gratefully received. Thanks Hal

Thanks Nico, very interesting and well written! How long is your pole on the Vega and if you know, how long is the line you use for the sheet and guy?

As I recall The pole is about a foot longer than the distance, on deck, from the mast to the base of the forestay. The sheets are about 50 feet or so, 5/16 or maybe 3/8 low stretch. Nicholas H. Walsh(207) 772-2191

Thanks Nicholas, the racing standard is for the pole to be no longer than the distance from the foot of the mast to the chain plate for the forestay. For the sheet/lazy sheet 50 ft sounds right (at least twice the boat length). Thanks for the confirmation. Hal

If you ever want to do PHRF handicap racing, you will incur a penalty if you pole is longer than The J length measurement, which as Hal said, is from the base of the mast to the intersection of the forestay and deck, measured on the plumb line up from the forestay/deck intersection.I think the J length for the Vega is 10'-2", if I remember correctly.Spinnakers cut to fit the Vega will most likely be cut assuming the pole is J length. Thanks folks for all your input.  It does look like a 10 ft pole would be best, however I have access to an 11 footer and that will have to do, as I’m not racing….  I appreciate all the help.
