We have recently purchased a used Hunter 170. Included with the accessories was a spinnaker and all of the fittings. I have the information on how to rig the sail and run the lines, BUT I need someone to give me a short lesson on how and when to raise the spinnaker, how to trim it, which side of the boat should it be used (depends upon the wind?) and how it should be brought down to minimize sailing trauma (like a wet sail if it drops into the water). As I become better at sailing, I would like to use the spinnaker, but I need some advice on the particulars. Thanks, Ted

Get help and instruction

Flying a spinnacker is usually done down wind. You have to set your pole and rig the guy (the line which controls the pole) and the sheet. You would be better off to find someone who knows how to fly this sail and either do it on your boat or theirs. If it's not flown properly, it can be a wild and unsafe experience. Good Luck.

Asymetrical

Flying on the spin is the best fun you can have on the boat with your clothes on. Brian is right that dead downwind is dangerous. Recommend an asymetrical spinnaker because it's safer and easier to deploy, slightly off the wind. Operates like a big geneoa without being attached to the forestay. Check with other 17s to see what size, and try this web site for quotes on price. Used spins are also out there, cheaper.

Spinnaker

Thank you for the feedback. I am still trying to find someone who uses a spinnaker and who can teach/show me how to do it correctly (safely) and well. I appreciate your input.
