I was hoping someone might know what size Spinnaker pole (length and diameter) I would need for a 1978 Hunter 25

I was able to research this. Ideally the diameter should be 2.5" and the length equal to the J deminision of the boat (mast to jib tack) so 2.5 " X 10.5'

'Secret' H25 spinnaker pole

The formal requirement for a 'legal' spinnaker pole is that it not exceed the 'J' measurement, which is the distance from the tack fitting, parallel to the waterline, to the front face of the mast. On the H25 this is about 10'2".

Here is my secret (which I absolutely HATE to mention on here, but since I am a nice guy, and you asked....). The Sunfish mast I have is 10'4" (+/-) or close enough. Fit it with two good 2" Forespar XLR ends (the cheapest and easiest to use of their range), paint with white Awlgrip; and voila! --a $200 spinnaker pole that looks like a million bucks. Problem solved and well done. ;)

(Now my whisker pole is the aluminum boom from my sailcar in the 70s; it's a little over 6' long and 1-1/4" in diameter and was used, as-is, to hold up my mother's clothesline till I pulled it out of the dirt and got some nice Holt-Allen ends for it. I even left on the original eye straps and can use it to pull stuff aboard using the pole lift tackle.)
