I recently posed a question regarding flying a spinnaker on a 23.5 but somehow the question was never really answered. My mast only has a sheave for the internal JIB halyard and no sheave was installed for a spinnaker. I would like to install one but need to know exactly where on the mast to cut the hole for the sheave block and where to place the exit sheave. Can anyone help ? Would it be easier to install an external block and cleat on the mast ? Can I use the jib halyard to fly the spinnaker ? Can anyone tell me the advantages of the different types of spinnakers available ? Thanks in advance.

From the Manual

Spinnaker halyard exit is 1.5" above the forestay. There is a diagram in section VII of the owners manual. How you attach the sheeve will depend upon which one you buy. Check the attached link for the US Spars hardware. I would go with an internal one but an external may be easier. A spinnaker needs to be outside the forestay so the jib halyard will not work. I have a spinnaker on my want list as well. Seems most folks go with an asymetrical on these boats. Hope this helps http://www.usspars.com/section_frame.asp?Section=Z190

hey, I'll give you what I know...

My 33 (1982) has internal halyards, at the top of the mast I had two unused, so I asked around if those could be used to fly a spinnaker. The answer was always no, then well you could but would not work very well and the forestay would always be in the way. At the top of the mast, mine has a s.s. loop extending out and forward of the forestay. I added a block and new line run completely outside, mounted a cleat on the base of the mast just for the spinnaker halyard. Will only use it when flying the chute, otherwise I run and fasten the spinnaker halyard to the bow pulpit. Now, I just need a spinnaker! Hope this helps, otherwise, there are a few sites you can search out that offer information on flying the spinnaker. Oh yea, I would opt for a Cruising Spinnaker so you don't have all the setup and gear for the spinnaker pole. good luck.

My experience

I wanted to add a spinnaker to my 26.5 and ran into the same problem. After discussing it with my yard's shop foreman, I forgot all about it. Ask a competent rigger in your area about load and thrust before doing anything.
