When I put the boat ('87 TR)away this winter I took the mast down to replace the halyards, electronics and shrouds. I also wanted to add a spinnaker halyard but, found no explination in the archives on how to run it back to the cockpit. Do you put the turning block on the mast or mount it to the deck? Port or starboard? Has any one done it internally? Are there any tricks from keeping it out of the roller furling? Thanks!

Spinnaker Halyard

On our 83 Cat 30 our spinnaker halyard is run internally. A great set up. The Halyard enters the mast about 6 feet up the stbd side of the mast and the turning block is on the deck. This allows you to "jump" the halyard when setting the chute. The halyard exits the mast about 3 feet from the top and is lead through a large harken turning block attached by a shakle to the top of the mast. This way the halyard is run clear outside of the headstay and jib halyards and we have never had an issue with the two fouling each other. On deck the tail of the halyard is lead through a deck organizer to a sheet stopper on the cabin top aft of the traveller. We have a cabin top winch aft of the sheet stopper to tighten or take the load off the halyard before opening the stopper. All and all a set up that has worked flawlessly for us. Now if we could we just figure out how to keep from occasionally raising the chute sideways...

Thanks Hugh

I had forgotten about the "jumping the halyard" option. This is a much needed feature.... Thanks

Masthead crane

I have a 27 and added the masthead crane from CatalinaDirect to allow the block to extend out another few inches to avoid laying on the headstay.
