I ordered an asymmetrical spinnaker for my 1986 Hunter 23. Hooray me! Shhhh. Don't tell the wife. It's a Christmas present. I'll post pictures early next year. It's gonna be the coolest spinnaker in South Carolina!

I have a roller furler for the jib so the jib halyard is not being used. I noticed today that the jib halyard comes out of the mast just below the forestay/roller furler. So my question is, do I need a separate spinnaker halyard that runs about the forestay or will the jib halyard work? If the jib halyard will work, I'd love for someone to explain how the spinnaker will fly in front of the furled jib. Every picture I've found showing spinnakers seems to show the halyard above the forestay. If I do need a separate spinnaker halyard, I need to know how to rig it on/through the mast.

Thanks!

Yup. The spinnaker halyard goes above the forestay, but you can use the jib halyard for now. To avoid the dreaded "halyard wrap" you will likely have to furl the genny before hoisting the spinnaker. I have a similar problem even though the spinnaker halyard exits the mast through the top of the same fitting that attaches the forestay. It's just too close to the top of my CDI flex furler head. So it requires special attention.
I haven't forgotten your galley dimensions, I just lost a few days due to a parent falling and crushing a hip. (and I thought retiring was going to be fair winds)

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear about the accident. Hope all is well soon.
I'm really excited about the spinnaker. Just didn't realize how much there was to think about when adding it. And I'm *really* excited about posting pictures when we fly it. I'm having it custom-made by FX Sails in Charleston.

I recently bought a new main. The first sail was the Good Old Boat Regatta in Tampa Bay this past January. I discovered a whole new respect for the old 23. I just didn't realize the old main was so blown out. Now as for the race results, I'm still licking the wounds.

Kemit, I have a spinnaker halyard block I have not installed yet. I have to sail over to another marina on my lake and just havn't gotten to it yet. I did fly my spinnaker on my jib halyard in my slip just to see it fly. I posted pics of it in my profile if your interested. I think you could sail it that way with your jib furled in light air. Tacking would be slow and interesting however. Thanks for posting this as it will get me moving on attaching my spinnaker halyard block. Charles

My '91 H23 with a Z-Spar has the jib halyard sheave below where the forestay eye attaches, as you describe. But I have a Harken furler, and the jib halyard is used - to haul up the halyard swivel part of the furler. I gather CDI uses some ohter way of holding the sail up?

I am not at the boat, but I am pretty sure I have an unused sheave on the front of the mast above the stay attach. Maybe you have one - if so, getting the asymm halyard in front of the stay ought to be much better.
