Does anybody use a spinnaker on their 35.5? If so how does it work, how much trouble to install the hardware and fly, and where did you get it?

Symmetrical vs. Asymmetric

What is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers and what would make the asymmetrical easier to fly?

Differences

Performance: - Asymetric: Optimized for all reaching - from about 60 to 140 degrees off the absolute wind. - Symetric: Optimized for beam reaching to running - from about 110 to 180 degrees off the absolute wind. Rigging and trimming required to set and trim the sail: - Asymetric: Halyard, (sock uphaul), tack line (seldom trimmed), sheet (trimmed like any foresail). - Symetric: Halyard, (sock uphaul), tack line (trimmed on any wind shift or course change), sheet (trimmed like any foresail), spinnaker pole, pole topping lift. Although the asymetric is not designed for running, we have flown ours wing on wing with the main when we had to (running down the Detroit River for instance). In fact, gybing between broad reaches is a faster way to get downwind than a dead run, so the asymetric with a simpler rig, and powerful reaching capability has been gaining more and more usage share on racing and cruising rigs. Good information

Great information guys. Looks like the asymetrical is the way to go for ease of rigging, etc. Now what's the size and where's the best place to get one?

TJ, you devil!! *666

Nice picture of you flying your kite solo, Mr daredevil! You can put a halyard in without pulling the stick. Last year I cut in a masthead spinnaker halyard sheave and dropped down a new halyard. Now I can fly an even bigger kite with my sprit for more speed. ;) This monster is about 50% bigger than the original. You will not need to buy a track for the mast just a car. The track is already on the mast. The car is available from RigRite.

Great project for a sailmakers apprentice

An asymmetric is a great way to cut your teeth on sail making. Light weight fabric means you can use a regular sewing machine for the seaming. As mentioned above, the dimensions are pretty flexible. You can get the real skinny in Emiliano Marino's "The Sailmakers's Apprentice" for about $25.

Asymetrical versus Symetrical

Great information and a lot of help. Thanks to all who've posted. Now that I've decided on asymetrical I'm looking at used spinnakers on the web and in most cases it doesn't describe whether it's asymetrical or symetrical. Some sites list triradial and I'm wondering if that's another name for either the symetrical or asymetrical. Otherwise I guess I'll just need to call and ask. Again thanks for all the input.

Thanks

David, thanks for the detailed info. I've crewed on a CS33 for club racing and was on the bow setting the spinnaker, but did not know the difference between the 2 types. We were using a symmetrical with a pole. Interesting story about the time we ended up with the main, genoe and spinnaker all flying on the same side of the boat as we rounded the mark, in very breezy conditions. A few tense moments when the boat heeled to the point of the cockpit filling with water until I could release the spinnaker and spill the air.

A symmetrical spinnaker will have identical luff tapes. An Akite will have a luff and leach with different lengths. Radial head, tri-radial refer to the cut of the sail not which type it is.

Spinnaker for 35.5

Thanks to all especially Alan. Now I've just gotta keep looking for a good used Akite on the web, then I'll worry about how to rig it.

Look at Sail.net.com

9 months agao I purchased an "A" sail from Sailnet for my Hunter 33.5. Got the snuffer and the ATN tack, I recall I spent about $1500 total. Visit their site and then put in the boat make etc and upmcomes the A sail for your boat. They are user friendly and will talk with you and answer all questions. Ask them for the site for the ATN people as they have a video that show raising and snuffing the sail, all very very simple. It put about 1 1/2 kts on the boat and can be sailed a little further forward than a beam reach. I love it. Question, I'm at pjn33@hotmail.com

Hugh, I did the same thing

Hugh, I purchased a used Akite last spring for my 356. Got a great deal on this site under gear for sale. Got it with the sock. From my experience, it is easier to rig than you think, just attach at the anchor roller and haul it up, use light weight sheets because each is twice the length of your boat and use snatch blocks as far back as possible on each side. In my experience, the sock is critical to using the Akite, makes dosing a simple task. Just to fly that big colorful sail is worth the effort.
