Spinnaker for H49

I would like to get an asymmetrical spinnaker for a Hunter 49. All the information I have indicates to base the luff length of the sail on the "I" measurement of the boat. The problem is the "I" measurement is masthead and the spinnaker halyard is quite a distance below that.

Does anyone know what the appropriate size asymmetrical spinnaker is for a Hunter 49? Or, how to figure it out?

Indeed, everywhere I look the published 'I' measurement for your boat is wrong; based on the boat being masthead rigged.

Do you have a spin halyard now? If yes I would tie a tape or line to it and pull it up to the mast. Or measure the luff of your jib/headsail. The asym luff should be about the same.

Or doing the math for a 7/8th fractional rig with j of 16.5 and a mast height of 54.5

sqrt(((7/8)*54.5)^2 + 16.5^2) = 50 feet. a good start.

Doesnt doyle sails who are linked to the hunter store have the proper measurements since they are the oem for hunter?

I bought an asym from North
the size i got is as folllows

p:50.58

E:23.25

I:54.58

J:16.50

Please ask if you have any questions

I have the same measurements, but those are boat measurements, not spinnaker measurements. Do you know the luff length? Do you know the foot length?

How has it been with the sail? Does it make a significant difference? How is sail handling?

Thanks Dave.

I took those measurements right from the quote from North Sails and after reviewing, your right, the rep didn't put the finished size on the quote.

It's great to sail but I just don't use it as much as I thought I would. The fact is I wouldn't buy one knowing what I know now.

I originally was going to get a code 0 but the asym had a larger effective wind range. The Code 0 would have been a lot easier to handle short handed as in just my wife and I. I did add a selden Gx furler to the asym and that helped but I still don't use it when it's just the the 2 of us because its a huge sail at 1239 sq ft . So it only gets pulled out when my racing buddies are aboard.

That captures some of my concern. I was going to get an ATN dousing system. That is supposed to make it easy to handle. I would think the furler is even easier. You think it is too much?

Does it have a big impact on boat speed?

Do you race your H49? How does it do? It seems like a rather slow boat to me.

no I don't race it. I race on an S2 7.9
The problem I had with the sock is two fold.
1) lines used to raise and lower the sock need to be tied off. I do that on the mast cleat.
which means being on deck. In my case the wife won't drive the boat with the chute up
and thats a problem in anything but really light air.
2) When dousing the sail with the sock, on several occasions a puff of wind would catch the bottom of the sail and up goes the sock, the sail goes forward
sheets go all over and my hands get shredded with rope burns. So I went with the furler which is really nice and safe in my opinion.

I am back to looking at getting a spinnaker. In fact, someone has let me borrow a slightly undersized asymmetrical spinnaker which should be perfect for introducing the family. Here is my next problem:

On a Hunter 49, where and how do you run the tack line. Should I just fix the tack pennant at the pulpit and not adjust the height? Any ideas/suggestions/photos would be appreciated.

I have a 2006 H33 and I connect a block to a hole in the anchor roller support. The tack line runs through the block to the cockpit so I can adjust the tack.

How do you get the line from the bow to the cockpit? The deck is raised so I cannot run a straight line from the bow to the cockpit. The genoa furling line runs through a series of blocks to stay outboard, but that will not help with a line with load that needs to get to the winch.

The easiest way is to shackle a couple of blocks to the stanchion base plates... that will get the line back to the cockpit near a convenient winch. Go over to West Marine and tell the staff what you're doing, they will hook you up.

I run it from the tack block through the cabin mounted jib sheet track to the port side cabin top winch. I do not leave it there permanently and only install it when I fly the Gennaker. I have deck mounted jib sheet tracks and aft mounted winches for the jib sheets.

Interesting thread. My boat is just about half as long as yours. I've been through the exact sailing-handling issues. I wish I could offer some sage advice. I be Jackdaw could help lots with the sail-handling.

From the tack block to the cabin mounted jib sheet track, doesn't it chafe against the cabin top where it rises up. There is not a straight line from the tack to the genoa block. I am concerned about putting blocks at the stanchon because that seems like a lot of load for the stanchons.

There is no load on the stanchions... the bases should have at least four bolts with backing plates anyway. The load is minimal because the blocks mainly serve as guides and the line angle is less than 20 deg. You can always install some deck pad eyes to anchor the guides.
You can also install bullet type fairleads on the deck or cabin to route the line aft.

The tack line does sit on the cabin top but there is virtually no movement once the tack height is set for the relevant wind angle. The tack line that I use is 1/2", the same as the sheets. The load on the genneker tack is also relatively low. I think that the sun beats up on the jib sheets more than the tack line will be chaffed. Again, the tack line is only installed when I fly the Genneker.

As Joe says, if it is an issue you could install dedicated fairleads.
