In the process of purchasing a 2005 beneteau 373. I would like to add a crusing spinnaker to the boat. Any suggestions as to where to purchase one would be appreciated. Also do you think this is a good idea for this boat? I will be sailing in New England typically a light SE wind in the summer.

Thanks

I purchased a 46' luff Gennaker and snuffer from North Sails Direct for my 361 and have been pleased with its construction and performance. This is the second sail I have purchased from them and my experience with Dan Calore has been excellent. I personally wouldn't want anything larger and you definitely want to spend the money on a snuffer - makes setting, dousing and tacking much more manageable. I attach the tack to one of the holes in the anchor roller with a short line and snap shackle.

Went through this on my B331 recently. When sizing your gennaker, I found it helpful to see what the PHRF guys had to say.

8. Asymmetrical Spinnakers
A. Choice of asymmetrical, symmetrical, or both types of spinnakers, shall be made at time of application or renewal and may be changed once during the sanctioned racing season.
B. Unpenalized luff (ALU) shall be no greater than 1.1 times the square root of (Ia2 + (J * (SPL%/100))2)
C. Unpenalized foot (AF) shall be no greater than (J * (SPL%/100) * 1.8). SPL% shall include extendible bowsprits.
D. Unpenalized mid girth to foot ratio (AMG/AF) shall be not less than .75.

When I got my rating back from PHRF of CB I was surprised me to find out that I have no penalty for racing with or without a gennaker.

Thanks Chuck. That is very interesting. I may race the 373 but consider it to be a cruising boat. I raced my previous boat (Tartan 3000) and got addicted. This boat has A/C and fuling main and 140 genoa. But you never know.

Best thing you'll ever do, sailing in N.E. in August!
Attached is a 'how to guide' that should walk you through everything you need to know.

That's a great guide for sure. Bob, you might want to divulge your connection to NP.

I'm also looking at a spinnaker for my boat. Since I single handle most of the time, I was looking at the Spinnaker Furling Systems by CDI , Bamar, Seldon.
This may be an option instead of getting a Sock.

The CDI can be had for as low as $855.

Has anyone had any experience with any of the systems?

Spinnaker Guide

Jackdaw,
Sure; I'm the technical director for Neil Pryde Sails and I handle everything Beneteau for Neil Pryde...so from Tuning Guides, to sail design, testing of proto-types and new boats.
I try and stay abreast of this forum and answer questions regarding our sails, boat tuning, rig and other....and hopefully be a resource for owners who don't contact us directly.
