Spinnaker and Gear Specifications

Not nearly enough info. Mast height is only one of many questions to be answered. The boats "J" dimension is another. Also, you don't say what kind of spinnaker. Are you looking for a symmetrical with spinnaker pole or an asymmetrical cruising chute or racing Akite. The type of sailing you do is also useful to determine the weight of the cloth. For light air sailing a 1/2 oz cloth is best, for moderate breezes, 12 to 18 kts 3/4 oz cloth would be better. Heavy air, 20+ kts would require 1 1/2 oz cloth.

Hunter 27 Phoenix,
Specifications - Spinnaker

Thanks for the reply. J = 12' - 1". I want a cruising spinnaker. I do not know what type would be best for this. Two previously owned sailboats I both had both had spinnakers - came with the boatand we really had fun flying them..

The type of sailing I will do is mosly cruising - light to moderate winds. I have not raced nor had any experience with different types of this sail. The last one, I believe was a tri Radial. I recently had an internet purchase on an Asymetrical with pole (11') and sock from a Catalina 27. I could not get much info from the Seller about its specs, but backed away because his mast height is 37' +, mine 41'+. It seemed to me that the sail would be about 5' short. He was literally giving it away because he cannot use it lake sailing where he lives. This looks like a crap shoot and I could be wasting time, energy and $$$.

Thank you for for whatever information you can share.

The luff length of a cruising spinnaker can be roughly 10% greater than your "I" which is 37.3'. So you can easily handle a 41' sail. BTW the mast height is measured from your waterline not the deck.

A cruising spinnaker has no need of a pole and its assorted gear. All you will need is a pair of sheets 2X the length of the boat, a tack line that you can run from the bow roller back to the cockpit and a spinnaker halyard. Genoa halyards do NOT double as spinnaker halyards.

The specs for a cruising spinnaker for your boat would be about; luff = 41, leach = 36, and foot = 20 feet. The exact dimensions are not critical and if you find one that comes close it will work just fine.

Check out Bacon Sails and Atlantic Sail Traders they both have good reputations.

Thanks once again for the info. What is the difference between a cruising spinnaker and Gennaker? Or the Drifter? I assume that the gennaker might be easier to use, since I will always be short handed, which sail would be the best?? And would the specs be the same for these as the Spinnaker? Also I have roller furling, so how would they be attached? Could you also reccommend a good book on sail plans (planning)??
