Does anyone know how to keep the line held under high tension ? My main halyard will not hold in the spinlock cleat on my H380 ... it just started to slip in the last couple races and I've had to tie off the halyard to the winch ... the boat has less than a year of minmal usage.. the main halyard does not appear worn...help!

maximum load

Assuming that your problem isn't a wrong-sized line or a worn-out cam, you may be exceeding the maximum load capacity of the rope clutch. Many people aren't aware that every rope clutch is designed to slip at maximum load rather than harm the rope. Check the FAQs at the link below.

common problem

This happen faily often. the line breaks down a little bit on the thing slips. lots of race boats use 2 on one line this helps but befor two long they will both slip. what i do is move the line to a diffent spot untill i run out of spots then replace the line. you can do this by shortnig it from the far end. others put a piece of line covering on the area that runs thru the jaws to make it slightly thicker. this works well if you dont have to pull that part of the line thru many blocks. I could foul a block that is slighly larger than the line. its a pain in the butt!

Spinlock vs Lewmar

If it's a matter of needing greater safe working load, you may want to switch to Lewmar Superlock D-2 rated at 2100 LBS vs Spinlock XAS-3 rated at 1.250 LBS. Check how much halyard stretch you're getting 1st.

Check

Chuck, Suggest you check to see if there is any wear on the Spinlock cam. Also if it is aluminium or plastic. Letting the halyard go by just opening the clutch will quickly wear sharpness off the ridges on the cam. My 376 is fitted with Schaeffer clutches and they savage the halyard so now I always wind up on the winch again before releasing the clutch. Okay for the main but slow for the spin when racing. Regards,
