Hi gang,
I've been considering an assymetrical spinaker for my Catalina 30TR. Does anyone have a picture or schematic of the parts on the mast head? I was thinking of adding a tang and block on the mast head while the mast was down. I was then thinking of the sock for dowsing would need another block. Your thoughts and thanks.

The masthead bail for the Spinnaker halyard is available from Catalina direct. Should be an easy install with the mast out of the boat.

The sock halyard is hoisted with the sail/sock, you don't need a second halyard.

Thanks Moody, as soon as the snow stops in Maine I'll do a road trip. Catalina has a spinaker halyard block also. Does this need an aditional swivel?

Internal or external halyards? Your 1981 should have the mast they used from about 1979 to 1985 (external).

The old setup (for the external halyard masts) just hung a block of the pin that is above the headstay pin in the crane. That will work, but the block does not have the freedom of movement that adding the bail allows it to have. The minimum cost solution is to just shackle a block to that pin. The shackle on the pin gives more freedom of movement for the block. The Spin halyard is extenral also.

Ideally you want the top of the spinnaker block sheeve to be as high or higher than the top of the jib sheeve. The Catalina factory install puts the block lower than the jib sheeve, not a big deal, but with a sock, the head of the sail is not as close to the masthead as without, so the problem is magnified. It depends on how picky you are.

I don't have a parts catalog that shows how the factory did it on the newer masts.
