Hi Everyone! It looks like I am going to be in the market for a roller furling for my newly acquired 30' Allied sailboat. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Spin-Tek furlers? The price is very attractive as compared to other furlers but would love to get some honest opinions on them. Thank you, Jackie

SpinTek furler

Hi Jackie: On my Hunter-33 I installed the SpinTek furler about 3 months ago. Have sailed about 20 times with it and rate it better than any furler I have seen irrespective of price. It is solid, built of quality non-corroding materials and best of all the furling operation is very easy. In any point of sail the furling effort is minimal. A few cautions: as with most furlers you need to unload the jib sheet before you furl. If you leave the furling line slack on the drum, you will spill loops off the drum and have to go forward to fix it manually. I have so far been unsuccessful in using the "öptional hook accessory" which costs $100. Have not given up yet. Follow the installation instructions exactly as described. Make no shortcuts or changes. It is a great product and I endorse it fully excepting the accessory. Note that the usable luff distance is about 4" shorter using the hook. Henry

Spin-Tec

When I was looking for a new furler for my H28.5 this spring, I did a lot of research. I really liked a lot about the Spin-Tec furler. It looks like a simple, rugged, quality product at a very competitive price. But having to go aloft to connect the halyard to the head of the sail seemed bizarre to me. Even more bizarre was the "attachment device" you mentioned that cost an additional $100. Trying to use that device seemed like trying to toss a ring over a bottle at the county fair, only the distance is your luff length, not 5 feet. In the end I went with a conventional Furlex and love it.
