I put one of those spin start systems on my 5 horse outboard and it works FAntastic! I also posted this in all sailors, but think we first got it in trailer sailors. Anyway no more pulling for me! I did find out though, that a 25 volt cordless drill is what was needed to turn the engine! My 18 volt, could do it but the brushes would smoke! So 25 volts it is and I wanted to thank the guy who pointed me this way for his imput and finding the system at Northern! if anyone is interested i can post some pics of the system here later

To spin or not to spin
Dennis, Sounds like you have an answer to a question a lot of boaters have. Please post what info you have as wellas photos. If you like you can PM me. It sound real doable and I hope easy to convert. Maybe this has application to other areas beside boating,as we know PULL STARTING can be a real hassel for a lot of pull start tools and such. On a Mac if you have a BIG HP engine electric start seems to be the way but if you have or use a dingy (mooring sites) who wants to pull your arm off due to a cranky smaller OBE who is cursed to the point one could toss it over the side. I do remember years ago that Craftsmen (Sears) offered for sale a lawn mower with a crank handle start engine. That seemed at the time a little easier on the arm and back. Oh well do have to close, thanks fo the heads up and idea. k9piper

Ill take some pics this wkend, and post them. The installation was very easy just one bolt on the crankshaft, and, it is a LOT easier to start the engine then pulling. As I did say, the spin start people claim a small drill can start the engines, but i found that it took a 24 volt, probably because the engine is new and has high compression. I certainly would do it again in a heart beat. Such a big difference. Before I had to bend over the stern to pull the engine, now no problem I just stand there. Hey for 29.95 it cant be beat! I spent extra for the 24 volt cordless, but that was okay too. got it on eBay! Northern carries the spin start, through the catalog sales!

The change over
installing the spin start took no more than twenty min. The spin adapter has to be put on the crankshaft, and torqued in. i already had a torque wrench, so no problem. As you said i might adapt it to other uses. Man it is a whole lot easier.I have pulled and pulled on engines before with great frustration, but no more problem.
