Sailing season is nearly here and I can't wait. However, I need to know the best way to keep the spider population down or non-existent on my Hunter during the season. Any suggestions?

I got them too

I haven't tried them yet but I read somewhere that if you put dog flea collars in strategic locations where spiders come aboard, they won't. w

Spider Spray

There's some great stuff on the market called spider spray. Kills em real fast. Stock up!

Cooked flea collars

I tried the flea collar thing. It drew loots of funny looks but didn't slow down the spiders. The hot Texas sun may have cooked the life out of them in a couple of days. I think there are too many other ways for them to come aboard, like the hot Texas wind! Tom/Ft Worth

Not so Fast

Guys, I killed a spider on a friends boat and he got very anxious. There is an old superstition that says a spider will not live on a boat doomed for the deep six. He told me that if it is a dry boat that there will be spiders. Just a knot in your sheet to think about. r.w.landau

I knew ole Landou would come up with the right answer. They always said that you should never kill spiders Until there is not enough room for both of you in one bunk. When you got too many put the dog collars on them or catch the females and give them birth control pills and that way you just keep what you got and you can train them to fetch TOM

Flash light

Wait til dark and then use a flashlight and look for them. You will find many more than you could imagine and learn where they hang out. Use a spray can and do this once a week and soon you will have a hard time finding one.

Are they ....

Are the spiders Long Legged Striped Back Web Didlers? If so, they like to cruise! They prefer warmer waters with exotic flies to munch on. They don't drink much beer, but they like to get friendly in bed on cooler nights. If they happen to bite, it makes an interesting scar that one can brag about to one's friends.

Spiders as Crew

There must be something on board that those spiders find to their liking, (i.e. things to eat). Find that and wipe it out and your spider problem may disappear. However, wipe out the spiders first and you might find you have an entirely different and possibly worse situation to deal with. Personally, I feel as long as I'm not on their menu and they're out of sight, they will rid my boat, home, etc. of other, less desirable critters. Snakes also work well, but that's another matter. Maybe, having lived in Fl. going on 30 years, I have an entirely different perspective on the bug issue. Of course, I do live alone and don't have to deal with someone squeamish about spiders (or snakes). Anyway, good luck. Roland S/V Fraulein II

Too timid

Why are you such a big baby about a bug that is basically so harmless? I know you are a big guy! If it bothers you so much then stay on land.

You do understand

You do understand that spiders kill the two most deadly insects known to man, don't you? J/C H340 Syzygy

Critters on my 410

I just visited my h410 after coming in this morning by truck from Florida. Took lots of pictures and found the rigger who will be putting all the neat stuff on it. He told me, "I couldn't believe some of the bugs in it." I asked, "You mean the eight-legged kind?" He confirmed it. Anyway, I found out what kind of beer he liked and said that I'd take good care of him during the next six weeks. Man, the boat was a mess after traveling across the states in the crummy weather, but to me, she was absolutely beautiful.

Steve - spiders

The other is woman...:>) Seriously - it's flies and mosquitoes, because of the diseases they carry, they are historically the two most deadly insects known to the human race... J/C H340 s/v Syzygy

spiders in fresh water

Ahoy Bob.....I guess you didn't get much help just alot of bantering back and forth. I can't help much either but I have lots of spiders on my H34 in the summer on the lake but am getting ready for a move to San Diego and have no idea what I will find down there. I live on my boat as well. I have spent time at Elliot and Shilshoe Marinas and haven't seen any spiders so I am wondering if it is a fresh water thing. One night last August I was out on my boat and shined a flashlight up the mast and damn near fell overboard in shock at all of the spiders that were crawling on my mast. We were even out in the middle of the water and not even sure where they came from. Good Luck......Susan "slipless in Seattle"

FORGET THE REST.....

.....THIS ONES THE BEST!!!! DEAR BOB, ONCE UPON A TIME I LIVED ON GRAND LAKE IN N.E. OKLAHOMA. WE HAD A PRIVATE DOCK WITH A PONTOON BOAT. EVERY NIGHT DURING THE SUMMER THE SPIDERS WOULD COMPLETLY COVER THE GANGWAY AND THE ENTIRE BOAT. I WOULD ALWAYS HAVE TO GO DOWN WAVING A LONG BROOM IN FRONT OF ME TO COLLECT ALL THE WEBS. WE HAD THE MEAN SPIDERS; BLACK WIDOWS, FIDDLEBACKS ETC...ONE EVEN BIT ME ON MY LEFT NUT! SO AFTER THAT EXPERIANCE I WHENT DOWN TO THE LOCAL C.O.O.P. (THAT'S A FARM SUPPLY STORE TO ALL YOU CITY DWELLERS), AND THEY PULLED UP THIS STUFF NAMED "VIKOR" LITTLE GREY BOTTLE. I WAS'NT SURE AT FIRST BUT WHEN I READ IT WAS MADE IN PASADENA, TEXAS I KNEW IT WAS MEAN OL STUFF AS YOU CAN'T EVEN BREATH THE AIR IN THAT CITY JUST S. OF HOUSTON! IT WORKED SO WELL THAT I ONLY HAD TO SPRAY ONCE A YEAR IN DOORS AND EVERY 3 MONTHS OUT DOORS. TRY TO LOCATE IT IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS AND I'LL SEARCH THE WEB AS WELL FOR YA. L8R, OCEANOKIE

I wish I hadn't read this thread

I was going to sleep on my boat tonight for the first time, but now I'm having serious second thoughts. Maybe they don't hang around when it's cold...... I'm getting shivers just thinking about it.

Mary, I've heard.....

that if you drink enough alcohol that they won't bother you. My preference happens to be dry red wine Cabernet, Zin, Merlot will all work. If you try this will a little bitter sweet chocolate you will sleep well and the s------ will not bother you.
