Went out sailing yesterday and the boat was covered with spider webs. I had streamers off of everything. I just hope they were passing through and not wanting to take up residence. Could even see streamers up to 100 feet in the air drifting along with the wind. Hope this picture comes out well. Jim S/V Java

Same thing here on Ouachita.

Have had the same thing happening down here in arkansas the last couple of weekends. Not sure if they are spider webs or something else. Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo

Been there too

I too have suffered from a bad spider infestation from time to time. On one cruise the buggers had actually spun a web at the masthead that completely immoblized my Windex and wind instrument! That got me mad. I was moving from one anchorage to another that day, and I kept hoping that the two would break loose, but no luck. I had to climb to the masthead to break them free. And this happened two years in a row! Ever since then I have placed a portion of one of those No-Pest strips inside the crane at the masthead during spring launch. Seems to be working. Guys, put up with it,

We name our spiders' kids. They stand (or is that crawl?) between you and mosquito's. How's the West Nile in your part of the country?

The only solution

I have heard to spider infestation is use your boat often. This seems to help. They don't stay where their webs are constantly being disturbed or destroyed. They are devils to get rid of because they lay eggs. Foggers, insect sprays and chemicals are almost useless (source: Terminex). Steve's suggestion of the No-Pest Strip is genius since that will kill hatchlings and adult spiders. However, Fred has a valid point, but I'm not sure spiders feed on mosquitos in enough quantity to make a difference. Besides, who really wants 10 million spiders on their boat? I sold a boat to a fellow in another state because of spiders and my wife's extreme phobia. She would not go in the cabin and forget sleeping on the thing. I moved my new boat to a slip further out away from the trees and this seems to help. And, do not pull your main sail cover and place it in the cabin because the spiders will go along. It will be interesting and certainly helpful to see if this thread produces more advice. I am always vigilant for ways to combat spiders.

Spiders Vs. Clothes Dryer Sheets

Here's an idea that really works on eliminating (or greatly reducing) spiders below decks: Place a few fabric softener sheets on shelves, under cushions, or wherever, throughout the cabin space. Any brand (including generic, "store" brands) will work. I use two sheets for my 24-footer. You'll find that spiders will quickly vacate your below decks living space. I've also noticed a reduction of spiders on the outside. Another benefit is that your boat will smell nicer!

made this same post a couple weeks ago

Based on the respoonses, they are in fact spider webs, each with a little egg on the end, and flying around is how they distribute themselves. What a year for bugs ... bumper crop of spiders, a couple of Mayfly hatches, some other kind of thing that exploded when you touched it and left a nasty smear all over the boat, etc, etc. But Saturday may have been the most exquisite sailing day ever !!!! No more Spiders

Demon WP every 6 weeks on the topsides and no more spiders. Cleans them out of the basement too.

Interesting link

Stan: That stuff sounds like some good stuff. It also sounds like you would want to be careful using it around the water. http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/SPEC/pick-demonwp1.htm

Not just boats

I spent all day Saturday sailing and all day Sunday mowing grass. We have several hundred feet of chain link fence on our little acreage and rolling along on the lawn tractor I had those white streamers all over me, most irritatingly in the face. You can't see 'em unless the sun is right. Found little brown spiders on my blue sweatshirt. I've gotten used to the spiders on the boat. Actually enjoy having a post-sail cigar at sundown and watching the little buggers come out of the bimini and start making webs. Mac
