I have recently bought a 1977 Catalina 22 and love it. I want to overnight on it but believe it is infested with spiders, inside and out. If I am doing a night sail, once the sun goes down spiders appear and start building their webs as I am undersail. Does anyone have tips on sprays, etc? Thanks, I hate spiders.

Sharing a Concern

Bought my C27 last July & all I can say is I share your concern. I'm in Montana & this past summer, I've had to clear cobwebs & squish spiders (despite my ecological consciousness) every time I come to sail. I've found some below & wonder if when we sleep on the boat, whether we'll experience bites. This is only one of the "hazzards" of owning a sailboat. Sailboats, with their masts, booms, and rigging, are wonderful for spiders that glide thru the air & find webbing opportunities. Sail magazines & online sites are silent on this, which is why you are asking. I guess all you & I can do is to live with it, & squish conscious-free.

Spiders

I bought an "unloved" 30. Lots of spiders inside and out. Outside just takes work and using the boat. Outside spray under the rub rail and smush alot. Inside set of one of the Raid bombs (smoke canisters). Use the boat. But there will always be a few.

Spiders are good!

Spiders provide a service by getting rid of those annoying biting insects. I haven't been bitten by a spider yet, but I have been bitten by mosquitos, flies, hornets...etc, and have been annoyed by gnats and no-see-ums. Although I'm not to fond of them crapping all over my boat.

Lysol works

Last year a friend told me to put open flat containers of Lysol liquid down below to keep the spiders away. It works well down below, but does nothing above deck, like in the mainsail cover. I pour the liquid into aerosol paint can lids and put them all over the place. I keeps the spiders away and it masks the smell of other things like the crew, the head, etc..
