spider patrol

I've found that the best protection against spiders, or at least keeping them in control is to go on spider patrol. At least once every week I go out at night with flashlight in hand and spray the spiders directly with spider spray. On my boat I find them building webs on or near the grill, life liness, anchor, and stern rail. This spraying keeps their population down and under control. Make sure you spray them directly are the bug spray will not be effective. Buy the spider spray that is on sale as I've found all brds to be useful. Good Luck!

Where do you buy spider spray?

None of the stores (marine or Home Depot) seem to carry it.

No pest strips

I've had problems with spiders nesting in places such as my masthead (and using the wind cups for part of their web!) and in the life sling bag. I have found it to be effective to use the "No Pest" strips that you can buy at hardware stores. Just one in the life sling bag keeps it free of spiders for a season. And a portion of a strip inside the mast at the crane keeps the spiders away there too. Pretty much anywhere there is a hole you can put part of the strip into. Steve Christensen

pest strips and wasps?

Do the pest strips help with wasps? I kept a little dish of moth balls out in the cabin while I was gone last year, and that seemed to help, but not completely. The wasps like little holes just like the spiders. Tom

Why Kill Them?

Unless they are poisonous, we do not kill spiders. They help keep the other bug population down. Now wasps are something else.

Only in Canada

If you are ever in a marine store in Canada look for a spider control product called "Capt. Pfab" . We had an infestation 2 years ago throughout the marina, and the condo complex we are part of. This stuff eliminates them quickly. Last year I bought an unltrasonic device at a Nautical Store in London, England it runs of batteries and sends out a ultrasonic sound that keeps Moths and spiders out of the area it is in. Seemed to work OK last summer. Can't remember the name of the place but it was a name like the Nautical Mind, surf the web and see if you can find them. JS

I have ants!

My problem is ants! They climb up the trailer frame and find their way into every little nook and cranny. I have to keep ant-traps aboard all the time! I guess that comes with being a trailer sailor!

Dennis...

...There must be a type of spray or coating that you can buy to coat the "access" points that touch the ground. Much the same way that they have a coating for tree trunks. I assume that this would be the trailer wheels and the yoke footing. I don't think that they can jump up to the trailer frame. :) Check at a Home & Garden shop for the stuff.

Thanks for the info

Ill check that out about the ants. Also as an other post stated the wasps can find unusual ways of getting in too!

Spider Control

Bill: While this is not a cure all, it does help control them. We have used dog flea collars. You cut them to fit around your pulpits and stanchions. They will last for most of the season. This method can be used in conjunction with some of these other products. The pest strips also work well for interior areas like lockers and cabins, but should be removed from the living area down below when you are aboard. I place the pest strips in the sail to prevent critter nesting and it works well.

Try the electronic device I use...

I use an electronic device I found at a discount store. It has a high pitched tone that drives bugs and small rodents crazy but is not bothersome to pets such as dogs and cats. The women that sold it to me swears by them. She said she has them in every room. She had squirrels, ants and other bug infestations. When she began using these devices, they all vacated. She claims, she hasn't had a bug in years. I have my boat situated in my yard at present and spring has been cold in New England this year so I'm not sure whether this device works or not, I have an extension cord running into the boat with this device. By this time of year, my home usually has an ant parade on the move but I have yet to see one ant since I placed these devices in every room. I don't know the brand, but they are usually generic made by several manufacturers and can be found usually in every store. I paid 3.99 for each one and they plug easily into an electrical outlet. Good luck, M.C.

re: "the electronic device"

I must be getting senile ... used them at home, but never thought of them for the boat. Duh!! BTW, there are cheap ones that have only one freq ... after awhile, the bugs and mice get used to the freq and come back. The next step up allows you to change the freq every month or so. Worth the extra cost. Fred, at my marina there are so many negligent boat owners (not sailors!) that their spiders can eat all my mosquitoes!!! Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake
