with spider repellant...it sort of works...what was that Edgar Winter album from the 70's? They Only Come Out At Night...same with spiders (one after the other. you can watch them walking across the docklines)...I'm thinking of getting one of those Davis portable lights when I'm in the cockpit at night...spiders seem to hate the light.
Well, I have not had personal experience yet. I was told by another sailor that his wife bought an ultrasonic pest chaser and it works great. You will need shore power. I just bought one so I will see soon.
Keith:We also have one of those electronic pest chasers. I really do not know. We have never really been overtaken by the spider crowd and very seldom see them in our boat. We have had these units on board for that last few years. One of the fellows in our harbor was a Vet. Pharmicist at UC Davis. He always has pest strips in his boat. He puts them in a bag when they are aboard and then repositions them again when they leave.
and also the spider spray. I have cut dog flea collars and pop riveted them to each stanhion and bimini. I think the most effective method though is to buy the spider spray at Home Depot etc. and after dark go around your boat with a flashlight and spray the females(as I understand) in the webs. The flashlight really makes the webs stand out. I have done this with some regularity and can say that it is highly effective.
Baby spiders spin a single strand of web and wait for a breeze to carry them to new territory. These are called spinnarets (sp?). We seem to intercept a lot of these when the boat is on the mooring. A quick once-over with a feather duster will pick up most spiders in the cockpit and cabin.
Bounce also works as a mosquito repellant when rubbed on your arms, legs, etc.We love it....it's not sticky, greasy, etc. and...you smell like clean laundry instead of bug spray!
if you read the fine print on most spider spray, you will see it is not approved for use around open bodies of water. This stuff is REALLY toxic and should be used with care.
