Spending a few days in SoCal - any ideas on what to do/see?

I have a conference in Vegas in a weeks time. After the conference I plan to rent a car, have my wife fly down and head west for 4 or 5 days.

So far, we are thinking of staying in San Diego or a few miles north at Del Mar or even further up the coast near Prismo Beach (near Santa Maria).

Would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Not looking for much more than walking on a beach (as our beaches here are under 3 feet of snow).

Getting out on the water would be nice too. I assume there is whale watching and harbour tours etc?

Thanks again,

Chris

There's the Maritime Museum, if you've not been.

I used to stay at the Portofino at Redondo Beach when there on business.. http://www.hotelportofino.com/ .. nice area with the beaches close by.. short hop down to San Diego along the coast road Long Beach and all the docks are just around the corner.. Garhauer folks close by.. Martec Propeller folks nearby. Take ferry across to Catalina..
Lots of stuff to see/do.

San Diego has the Embarcadero, Old Town, and the USS Midway. I also believe the Star of India is still in the Harbor near the Midway.

Head north to Oceanside and have a nice walk around the harbor. it is about a three mile round trip walk. Nothing major to see there but it is just a nice walk.

Continue north to Dana Point. Very nice harbor for walking also. Some nice shops and restaurants to visit while walking.

San Diego has boat rentals and charters, so if you are in for a little sailing in the harbor, it is available.

Enjoy your stay. Bring sun tan lotion, sun glasses, and short sleeves. LOL

Pismo Beach is nice. It's a smallish town. Very tourist driven. Most of the time, it is cloudy and gray due to the maritime cloud cover. It is near the central coast wine country of Buellton and Solvang (which is definitely worth the trip - have you seen the movie Sideways??). It has a nice pier and a few shops and restaurants. Beach is ok - but not great. It's a pretty good haul because there is no easy way around Los Angeles and you have to pass through Santa Barbara as well. By the way, Santa Barbara is very nice.

If you want a "real" taste of Southern California, head to Santa Monica and Venice Beach. You'll get a full dose of beach culture there and there is a walkway/bicycle/skateboard path that goes for many, many miles in that area. If you want to see a guy roller blading in drag, this might be your opportunity.

I very much enjoy the San Diego area from Coronado Island all the way up to Oceanside. La Jolla is a great place to walk around if you want something a bit upscale. On Coronado Island (which is really an isthmus) there are all kinds of things to do from walking beaches, renting bicycles, bars, micro-brews, restaurants and the old Hotel Del Coronado which is amazing.

They do have whale watching out of San Diego and my favorite is Sail San Diego - they use 40 foot Catalina sailboats and take only 6 people on each boat. You aren't crammed onto a boat with 200 of your closest friends. Link: http://www.sailsandiego.com/

Del Mar (north of San Diego but south of Oceanside) is also a cool little town with shops, restaurants, etc. One of my favorite seafood restaurants in the area is Poseidon. Right next door to Poseidon is another very good restaurant (but I can't remember its name right now). Too many great places to even list.

Newport Beach is also very cool. It's a great place to explore and great beaches.

I have also had a good time in Long Beach - the Queen Mary is docked there and you can grab a ferry out to Catalina Island for the day if you REALLY want to do some walking!

Asking what to do is Southern California is a tough question. Every spot you mentioned has something fun and interesting to offer if you look for it. I've been up and down the coast on a motorcycle a couple of times and in cars many times.

If the Kansas City BBQ is still in business in San Diego, that's where they filmed the bar scenes from Top Gun. I never would have picked up on that, but my friend pointed it out.

Pismo is a in a completely different part of California... It's near San Luis Obispo.. central coast wine region etc... (remember the movie "sideways") great area to visit... but I'd make that part of a coast highway, big sur, hearst castle, Carmel, monterrey peninsula trip.

San Diego is the place to go.... plenty of touristy things to do, the fabulous zoo of course, but plenty more. But you can rent a Cat 18 or 22 at Seaforth in Mission bay for some excellent sailing... either out in the ocean or in the bay itself.. and there are many many beaches... from the scenic La Jolla Cove... Mission Beach or Ocean Beach.... to the infamous Black's Beach near Torrey Pines. just too much to mention.

That's why I like keeping my boat in Mission Bay... rather than SD Bay... there are coves and beaches within easy walking.. Stand Up Paddle boarding and Kayaking is very popular in MB... oh... and of course there's the sportfishing...it's all right there.. Dana Inn is affordable on the water hotel... but the Islandia, Bahia, Catamaran and Princess Resort are all right on the water .. Nearby Pacific Beach has all the happening clubs and bars...also tons of bike and surfboard rentals.

Also... it's an easy drive to Coronado and the Hotel Del.... awesome.. with a beautiful beach to boot.

Although not boating related, this is a perfect time to visit Death Valley and also spend some time in the Mojave desert - maybe go via Needles California and drive the section of the old route 66 that runs through to Ludlow.

Death Valley is one of the most wonderous places I have ever been.

Minney's in Costa Mesa!

Just off the PCH a mile or so.

I've heard about it for years. Stopped there while in SoCal over the holidays.
Amazing place. You'll find something there that you didn't know you needed.....guaranteed.

Have fun.

The desert is amazing. Two years ago we drove from Vegas to Lake Havasu and attended the Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention (that was an amazing event). I even ran into a trailer sailor in Searchlight - and ended up helping and sailing with him at Havasu.

Last year we drove to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Took the scenic route on old 66 from Kingman to Seligman. Found a most incredible BBQ in Williams AZ (the Singing Pig - in a hundred year old saloon).

Always loved the desert - nothing like it around home...

Thanks for all the information - as a result we have a plan!

  • Driving from Vegas to San Diego on Feb 26.
  • Staying two nights at the Island Palms Hotel & Shelter Island Marina
  • Go whale watching on a Catalina 40 with sailsandiego.com
  • Tour the Midway and Star of India (and Maritime Museum)
  • Drive to Del MarFeb 28
  • Drop by Minnies and give them all my extra money
  • Stay overnight in Del Mar, overlooking ocean
  • Take two days to drive back to Vegas
  • Return home, shovel out driveway and wait for spring :)

Should be a fun break from winter. It'll be nice to see the Pacific again - my wife had her first sail on the Pacific (Cal 20, Vancouver BC) and I think it was only my second time on a sailboat that trip. That started it all - we bought our first sailboat shortly after that and never looked back.

Thanks again for all the advice - much appreciated.

Marina del Rey is supposedly the largest non-commercial harbor in the US. It's next to LAX. For a beach I would choose Laguna (to mix with shopping) or Huntington (good surf and it has an off-lease dog section). For non-water attractions, I always take visitors to Universal Studios, which is truly amazing. http://www.universalstudioshollywood.com/

Dropping by Minney's might take more time from your Del Mar stay than it's worth. I'd postpone the Minney's excursion till your trip home... since it is only a half day drive to Vegas. In truth, you could leave Del Mar in the A.M... Drive up the PCH through Laguna Beach, check out some art galleries or enjoy "main beach"... have lunch at the "beach house café" continue on up Newport coast and Corona del mar... lots to look at.. then... drop by Minney's.... lots of junk to go through but you may tire of it quickly unless you have a shopping list... anyway.. remember that you're in so cal... and there's traffic nearly all the time.... so ... either find a nice place to spend the night and get up the next day for pleasant drive to Vegas... it's about 6 hours from Newport Beach.... or work your way out to beautiful Riverside for a night at the fabulous Mission Inn Resort and Spa www.missioninn.com .. they have wonderful restaurants and you can leave around Noon after lunch.. roll into vegas around 4 pm....
