are you spinning it fast enough?

when you say you are doing it by hand i wonder if you a going fast enough. I would use an air compressor with a blower or a water hose to spin it.

Try the log setting

turn the knot meter to it's log setting and reset the trip meter or note the distance traveled and then spin the paddle wheel for a minute or so. The wheel has to be spinning pretty fast to show even 0.1 knots.

Lots of potential candidates for

this situation. I would think it is probably corrorion in one of the connections, or corrosion inside the wire connector itself. You may be able to check the continuity of the connection wires with a VOM. Also, if your paddlewheel is the type with magnets attached in few places, make sure you have all of them. Good luck.

time for a new transducer

you don't need to spin a knotlog fast to get a reading. a simple flick of a finger will do. if it doesn't respond, it's worn out.
