Multi-hull

Some kind of multi-hull like a Corsair. Why?

One of the "J" boats.

for a mono hull

it depends

on several things, including how much crusing gear you load into your boat - even a very fast boat can be slowed down by too much weight. If you are thinking of a displacement hull, you are, in theory, limited by the water line length of your hull. A light displacement boat will accelerate faster, but a heavier boat will punch through waves better. As noted, multihulls are faster than displacment monohulls. jim kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Impressed me the most. I remember flying a chute all the way down the main channel out of Pearl Harbor we were all grinning from ear to ear.

Have you ever watched the Australian

dinghy races with their clouds of sail and outrigger boards that the crew rides on the weather side of the boats. When they tack the crew races down the planks and up the other side.

comparing boat speed

Tom, Here's a chart that will show you basice speed handicap ratings for over 2,000 boats. The PHRF ratings look at hull and rig design, plus past performance in races to determine speed ratings. The lower the handicap the faster the boat. Pick out a couple cruising boats you like and find 'em on the chart. I leave it to you to find out why so many boats of the same length could have such a disparity in speed. http://www.yralis.org/2005/base_ratings.html

The P26 is a very fast cruiser. If you don't mind going a few feet longer, the P28-1 is an excellent choice. Both were built very well and have stood the test of time. A nice P26 will go for about $8-10k. A P28-1 $10-15k. I used to own a P28 and I would regularly pass 30 footers. I won't mention brands to avoid any flame throwing ;-) Tim R.
