Hello All, I have just purchased a "new to me" 1989 H30G. The depth and speed transducers are located under a small hatch in the V berth. My knot meter is not regestering anything. The boat has the "Signet Smartpak" which I believe is stock. There are what appears to be two speed tranducers zip tied together and only one has a wire connected to it. The one with the wire is not in the thru hull. Someone said that the one that is in the boat might be a "plug". Two questions: If its a "plug" can I pull it out and put in the other one while the boat is in the water and also the one with the wire does not appear to have a "paddlewheel" it is just concave on the bottom???? Any help would be great! Thanks!

tranducers

Yes you can pull the tranducer out and replace it with the plug. That is fact is what it is meant to do. Be prepared you will get some water (less the a gallon) however just remove and replace as quickly as you can. The paddle wheel is needed for the speed tranducer to work so it would seem that you wil need to repair or replace the tranducer.

Agree with Pete

Once the tranducer is out of the water, you can have someone familiar with electronics and circuits test it. Then you may have to engage the yard to do the repairs. Be sure to have them calibrate it properly to show the correct speed. I like GPS for the basis.

plug it

When you pull the trans out, you can put your palm over the thru hull while you get the plug ready to go in. You'll get a little water that will geyser up, but don't panic. Signet instruments are junk so be prepared to replace them.
