I have manually spun the paddle wheel on the transducer and still no reading as to speed. I can get temperature etc so i know the electrical connections are intact. Can anyone tell me how to dis assemble the transducer ? Is that necessary? The Raymarine chap mentioned that one of the paddle wheels may have lost its magnetism( I always wondered how the readings were measured:) ) any help?

replace sending unit

the PO of my boat reported the same problem....he simply bought me a replacement sending unit which I connected to the display at the helm first and spun the wheel to make certain it showed a reading. You can splice the new sending unit off of teh same wire as the existing unit.

Your assumption may be wrong

Just because the unit will return a temperature reading does not mean all the connections are intact. The transducer is probably wired with a 5 conductor cable. Only two of those wires support the temperature sensor. One is likely a bare wire screen. The other two are for the speed sensor. Go to the Raymarine site and download an installation manual if you dont already have one. That will allow you to identify the correct wires. Then check the connections on the back of the display unit before buying a new transducer. You also might be able to check the lost magnetism theory by removing the paddlewheel and moving a small magnet through the housing slot. The paddlewheel can also be purchased seperatly. The transducer manufacturer is Airmar. Thier site will have manuals for download that can tell you how to service the transducer. The paddle comes out by the simple removal of a stainless pin.

Check your connections

Usually the problems can be traced back to wirring and connections. Speed and temperature are different so, the temperature sensor has a good connection but the speed does not. Pull off all the wires from the terminal block and scratch the wire with a knife or any other metalic object to scrape away oxidation. After wires are all cleaned off, re-insert them. If you have a pre-terminated connector, take the connector off and stick something like a paper clip inside the connector to rough up the contacts. The point I am trying to make is this - check your connections and clean them up - this usually fixes most problems.

Replace the transducer/sender

I had similar problem. Temp reads ok but paddle wheel no reading. Replace transducer/sender (from Airmar - OEM to Raymarine) solve the problem. Cable can be cut & slice so you don't have to re-run it back to the display unit.

I think it is a wire

Use your GPS for speed and keep the plug in. That is what I do.
