I purchased a Standard SL30 speed/log meter with a transom impeller a year ago and have never gotten it to work properly. A rep from Standard indicated it would never work with a transom impeller but needed a through hull. Can a through hull be mounted on a Hunter 23.5? Has anyone had success with a transom mount? Thanks for your help.

SL 30 Knot meter

I have a Knot meter and a depth meter on my h23. The transducer for the depth meter is mounted to the transom just between the outboard bracket and the rudder. The knot meter wheel mounts to the back of the depth transducer. All work well. The depth transducer was designed to piggy back the knot wheel off of it. Both units are of the Standard SL 30 series. Good luck with yours.

Why not a GPS?

I wouldn't worry about installing through-hulls. After you have drilled your first hole, and sealed it with the proper fittings, the rest are easy. Just make sure the boat is hauled at the time (ha-ha). But in this case, why bother throwing good money after bad? These days you can a get good basic hand-held GPS unit for about $150. Communications with your computer and uploading of information is an option with most models. It will give you speed-over-ground in knots and MPH, course, position and much more, and with greater accuracy than most speed/log meters. No maintenance either. The accuracy and convenience is terrific. Great toys! Will keep you occupied for hours.

gps NOT

gps readings for speed over ground are wildly off sometimes. nobody relies on these readings--or at least almost nobody.

Be careful to seal the fitting

I just resealed my through-hull fitting for my knotmeter and found that the core was saturated with water. My advice here is to be sure and seal the core to keep it from getting wet.
