Speed in gusts

A couple of weekends ago we were out in a gusty wind. White caps and gusts probably in the 35mph range. We had the full jib out, and reefed the main. Using a handheld GPS, I clocked our 170 at a maximum speed of 8.8 knots, on a broad reach. Has anyone measured their boat's speed?

Yes!

I set up the GPS to record top speed and in Corpus Christi Bay I got 10.3 Knots on a relatively mild day with winds araund 20 knots and slight gusting. My most enjoyable day was at Clarksville, Va , no GPS, just me and a couple of windboards. The 170 was feeling tight and I was on a Broad Reach so I let out the Main and Jib to get my telltales straight and the boat came up on a plane where I stayedd for about 20 minutes and then noticed I was fast running out of lake. Spent the next two hours really sailing, tacking back up the lake. I have no Idea the speed but Buggs Island Lake is about 5.5 miles lone in that section. I figure I used about 4 of it in that 20 minutes. I did not reef the main or shortne the Gib, I was so high on adrenaline I could sailed around the world. That was July 2nd of 2000, only one of two times I ever got on a plane with the 170. No idea of wind speed but I know it was over 15 Knots with white caps and windboards.
