Wondering if there is a way to be able to play music into cockpit speakers, but have the VHF/SSB override the music signal when receiving a transmission?

I believe there are VHF radios which can receive broadcast band transmission which will mute the secondary frequency when a Ch16 transmission is detected. I know my handhelds do that.

Yes, one can easily be fabricated such that when the VHF audio output is energised it will turn on a relay that will switch the speakers to VHF radio for a preset period of time. After not receiving VHF audio for 10 seconds, the relay timer will expire and the sterio speakers will be reconnected.
Haro.

Sounds easy for Nikola Tesla.

In the pro audio world this is called talkover, duck or ducker. A typical application for such a device would be music playing on some overhead speakers. The music would be turned down or muted when someone makes and announcement or page and then returned to a normal level when the person is done. Some units have a delay afterwards which is useful for speech

A quick search revealed a Rolls DU30. It's compact and runs on 12-16v. Retails looks to be $80 and there's a new one on ebay now for $65. If you want to drive costs down theres a plethora of audio devices including mixers that have this feature. I'm sure you could find something used for $20-30

I have an electrical engineering degree, it is easy for me. It takes few integrated circuits and components to design and assemble one. Since it requires no power supply and runs on 12vdc, I estimate less than $20.00 if I was making it for myself. This device may already exist to purchase as it is indicated by others.

Is your VHS able to drive one or all the speakers in your cockpit? I assume you have a head unit. Do you typically play music through aux in, CD, radio, USB etc?

The boat has a cd/radio player with salon speakers; the vhf and ssb radio are not linked to any audio output, but only have their built in speakers...formerly there were cockpit speakers, which were unserviceable, and i have not determined what their input was yet.

You'll most likely need some sort of amplifier to boost the output of the VHF. The 2-5 watt amplifier in the VHF wouldn't be able to drive all of those speakers very loudly and would probably fry after a few months.

Car audio amplifiers can be had for as little as $10 for cheap Chinese ones. This also might be a good opportunity to get a decent amp to drive those cockpit speakers. I'll try to draw up a diagram later today to better explain how such a system would work. How many speakers do you have in the cockpit? Do you want the salon speakers to switch to the VHF as well?

Wire in a remote station problem solved, that way you can talk, listen and change channel on the VHF radio leaving it independant of the entertainment system.

I have two waterproof speakers I want to install in the cockpit, but I may not get a chance to do it before i leave on our crossing to Hawaii soon, too many other more pressing issues atm. Having the salon speakers duck would be nice if an emergency transmission came through.

Good idea but I have one installed VHF, a back up unit, and a handheld, and don't want to/don't have time to order another radio before I sail out of this place.:poop::thumbsdown:

The station is not a complete unit, it is only a multi function microphone, able to scan channels, adjust volume, listen and talk. Sorry if you think that it was a crappy idea, but perhaps you should have opened the link, you would have then seen what I was talking about......

I think he was referring to getting out of Pago Pago, American Samoa.

No offense meant, Day Dreamer, the graphics WERE referring to Pago Pago and trying to get out of here......I sold an older Command Mic not too long ago, as I had gone through a couple of radios that were not compatible:facepalm: Your idea was fine, just have other priorities currently.
