Spam from Utbox.net?

The last two times I replied to a post, I got an email like this:
Your email address, "my@address", isn't recognised by utbox.net.
Please check that you have used your registered email address.

If you have an account, you can configure it to accept messages from
this address. To do so, follow these steps:

1. log in to the member centre at Internet Fax, Web SMS, Fax API and SMS API Service Provider
2. click "Preferences" at the top.
3. click your fax number on the left.
4. enter your address into the text box labeled "accept emails from
these addresses".
5. click "Update".

If you do not have an account, go to Internet Fax, Web SMS, Fax API and SMS API Service Provider or call
1300
136 022 to find out more about the utbox.net fax service.

I used to get this too. I emailed UTNET and they sent a very
comprehensive reply explaining someone was using my e-mail address to
post spam.
Since I received their reply I don't get these messages anymore.

I know this is an old subject, but when I found the reply from
Utbox.net in my "Misc" email file I thought I'd share it. It would
appear someone farmed the Yahoo Vega group for addresses to use for
mailing out spam :-(

"Hello Peter,
Thanks very much for your email.

We don't maintain any marketing mailing lists or send out any emails
other than what our customers request from us as part of our service,
or
in response to people emailing our gateway servers.

If you are receiving emails from us, and are not sending to our
servers
first, then the most probable reason is someone is using your email
address for spamming which in turn happens to send to our gateway
servers (@*.utbox.net). Our server politely responds to inform you
you're not an authorised account holder.

In this case we can't actually do anything as our system responds to
an
email which appears to be from your address. My personal advice would
be
to not list your email address on the internet in it's normal form
(i.e.
support@...) but rather space it out and add characters to it
that
a human could understand but a robot/script could not such as support
at-mark support dot net, though I suspect some robots will pick up
words
such as "at" and "dot" and translate them to @ and . anyway.

If you find that it happens often setting up an email filter might
also
keep it from invading your inbox. You can obviously add our emails
into
that filter along with any others you might receive as a result of
your
email address being used as the reply for spam (like bounce backs,
weird
emails in response to you that you never sent, undelivered
notifications
etc).
